Urban Tokyo Matcha Whisk (Chasen)

Cut from a single piece of purple bamboo, 80 fine prongs fan out. They're what work air into the matcha as you whisk, creating a dense, even layer of foam. The more prongs, the finer the foam — and with 80 prongs, this chasen ranks among the finely crafted models.

Why prong count matters

A chasen with many prongs distributes the powder more evenly and creates a creamier foam than a whisk with fewer, coarser prongs. The purple bamboo is handcrafted, and every piece is slightly different. You guide the whisk in brisk W or M motions until fine bubbles form on the surface.

Who it's for

For anyone who values a dense, fine foam and prefers a traditional bamboo tool to get there. The high prong count makes it especially well suited to vigorously whisked matcha. And for anyone looking to replace an old whisk whose prongs have lost their spring over time.

The right setup

You'll find the matcha to match in our ceremonial matcha from Uji. Bowls, holders and complete sets are in our Tea Accessories collection, and for the right water temperature, it's worth a look at our Varia collection.

Frequently asked questions

What do 80 prongs mean?

The prongs are the whisk's fine bamboo bristles. 80 prongs create an especially dense, fine foam and distribute the powder evenly. Whisks with fewer prongs give a coarser texture.

How do I care for the chasen?

Rinse under lukewarm water after every use, without detergent and never in the dishwasher. Let it dry on a chasen holder or lying flat, so the prongs keep their curved shape.

Is it suitable for usucha and koicha?

Yes. For usucha, the thin matcha, you whisk briskly until foam forms. For koicha, the thick matcha, you stir more slowly into a smooth paste. This whisk handles both.

Can I see the chasen in person before buying?

Yes, at our showrooms in Bern and Zürich. Delivery takes 2 to 4 working days across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein.

Whisking, stirring, watching the surface change — as a coffee roastery, we know this attention to detail well. If you're pairing your matcha with an espresso, you're in good hands with Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight . That's our recommendation, one of many.
