Option-O Lagom 01 – 102 mm single-dose grinder with Pre-Crushing System
18 grams of light beans go into the hopper, and you press the button. Before the burrs even start working, you hear the PCS — a short, controlled crunch as the Pre-Crusher breaks the whole beans into even fragments. Only then do they fall onto the 102 mm Mizen Blind Burrs. The brushless motor pulls through steadily, without any drop in speed. Six seconds later, 18 grams sit in the magnetically held cup. A single tap on the Chute Knocker, and the rest falls cleanly after. Switch to a pour-over with the same grinder and the same grind range — just a few clicks coarser — and what comes out tastes clearer and sweeter than what you know from 98 mm grinders. That's not imagined. That's 18 percent more grinding surface and a Pre-Crusher that no longer lets the beans arrive at the burrs chaotically.
The Lagom 01 is Option-O's flagship — a single-dose grinder that brings together two things that had never come in this combination before: 102 mm blind burrs (instead of the industry-standard 98 mm) with 18 percent more grinding surface as a result, plus the patented Preliminary Crushing System (PCS), which breaks whole beans into even fragments before they reach the burrs. Coffee Coaching Club is a partner of Option-O and carries the Lagom 01 in both available configurations.
The Preliminary Crushing System — why the burrs only start working afterward
Anyone who looks honestly at an espresso grinder finds the same trade-off every time: whole beans hit the burrs uncontrolled. They arrive in bursts, press harder on one side than the other, and the motor responds with load spikes. The result: a share of very fine particles (fines) that doesn't come from the intended grind, but from this chaotic entry.
The PCS addresses exactly that. An auger-like mechanism feeds the beans in a controlled way into a Pre-Crusher, which breaks them into smaller fragments before they reach the 102 mm Mizen Blind Burrs. What Option-O measured in its own tests: filter Drawdown times get up to 15 seconds faster at the same grind size — a clear sign of fewer fines and a more even particle distribution. For espresso, the grind can be pulled two to five clicks finer (8–37 microns) with otherwise identical parameters. That doesn't mean every bean automatically tastes better. It means the grind range in which you can work cleanly gets wider. Our observation in the showroom: with lighter roasts, the effect is most clearly noticeable; with classic dark espressos, it's more subtle. That's one view, one of many.
Since April 2025, the PCS has come pre-installed from the factory on every Lagom 01 with 102 mm blind burrs. On the 98 mm configuration, the PCS isn't available — the 98 mm burrs use a different carrier mechanism.
Mizen burrs — developed for modern light roasts
Option-O developed the Mizen burrs in-house, with a clear focus: light roasts, single origins, fruity profiles. After a long testing phase, the geometry and surface properties are optimized for a sweet, juicy cup character with clear aroma separation. Anyone hooked on the fine nuances of a light bean — peach, bergamot, black tea — finds more of it on the Lagom 01 than on a typical 98 mm espresso grinder.
Three burr configurations are available. The 102 mm Mizen Blind Burrs (Option-O's recommendation) use the full PCS, have about 18 percent more grinding surface thanks to the removed screw holes, and deliver the lowest retention. The 102 mm SSP HU Blind Burrs are an alternative for anyone looking for a brighter, clearer profile with a bit more acidity presence — compatible with the PCS. The 98 mm Mizen-OM (screw-mounted) is the right choice if you want to stay flexible and tap into the wider 98 mm burr market — without PCS, but with access to every 98 mm third-party set.
Tool-free disassembly and Zero-Calibration
What surprises people in the showroom: the grinder can be completely disassembled without any tools, cleaned and put back together — and your grind setting is exactly where it was. The Zero-Calibration system remembers the position, no stickers, no notes, no searching for the sweet spot again. The grind display sits at the front and stays clearly readable even at extreme ranges (very fine for espresso, very coarse for French press). A removable safety limiter protects the burrs from accidental adjustment below zero.
Variable RPM and magnetic modular platform
The brushless DC motor (1300 W peak) delivers variable speed from 200 to 1700 RPM. Lower RPM (around 400-600) reduces thermal load and is especially interesting for very light roasts. Higher RPM (around 1200-1500) increases the share of fully pre-crushed beans ahead of the burrs — RPM thus becomes an extra tool for cup character, not just a way to speed up grinding.
The modular platform at the bottom magnetically holds either the included 58 mm portafilter holder or a dosing cup. Aftermarket holders and alternative portafilter sizes can be retrofitted. The lower stand height reduces the risk of damaging the platform when clamping in.

Who the Lagom 01 is for
The Lagom 01 is for anyone who wants a flagship-level tool and whose focus is on light roasts, single origins and fruity profiles. Anyone who wants to resolve the trade-off between espresso and pour-over — both from the same grinder, both at a high level — finds in the Lagom 01 a tool that handles both jobs equally well, with nothing given up on either side. Cafés and roasteries that need a dedicated grinder for their single-origin programs, one that doesn't just run alongside the standard espresso grinder but takes over the main work.
The Lagom 01 isn't for everyone. Anyone looking for classic dark espressos with a dense body and creamy crema finds a different character with a Weber Workshops EG-1 and its CORE burrs — more body, more crema, less aroma separation. Anyone looking for 80 mm in a more compact form: Option-O Lagom P80 with 80 mm Mizen burrs and a 500 W motor. Anyone who wants 58 mm variability and 63 mm compatibility in one grinder: Varia VS6 (exclusive Swiss importer). A detailed comparison of the endgame options is available on EG-1 vs. Lagom P80 vs. Lagom 01.
The Lagom 01 is the grinder for anyone who knows what 102 mm blind burrs and a pre-crusher are good for — and for anyone who wants to find out. Whoever wants it knows why.

What goes with it
The Lagom 01 shows its potential with thermally stable machines that extract light roasts cleanly. La Marzocco Linea Mini R with its saturated group and brew-by-weight is the natural combination — both machines rely on stability among few variables. Also, La Marzocco Linea Micra or the GS3 are a good match too. For manual lever extraction with precise grind control: Flair Espresso 58+2 (exclusive Swiss importer).
For brew-by-weight (on the La Marzocco Mini R via Connected Scale license): Acaia Lunar in the USB-C version. For a standalone espresso scale with an app and flow-rate display: also Acaia Lunar. For puck prep: Weber Workshops Moonraker as the premium option, or Normcore WDT Tool as the affordable alternative (exclusive Swiss importer). For airtight bean storage: Airscape. For precise coffee water: Apax Labs mineral concentrates (exclusive Swiss importer). Background on burrs, Pre-Crushing and particle distribution in our Sensory World.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Pre-Crushing System (PCS) actually do?
The PCS breaks whole beans into even fragments before they reach the burrs. Option-O measured noticeably faster filter Drawdown times (up to 15 seconds) and a wider usable grind range for espresso (2–5 clicks finer possible) as a result. That points to fewer fines and a more even particle distribution. In the cup: noticeably more clarity and sweetness, especially with lighter roasts. With classic dark espressos, the effect is more subtle.
What's the difference between the 102 mm Mizen Blind Burrs and the 102 mm SSP HU?
The Mizen Blind Burrs (Option-O's recommendation) deliver a sweeter, juicier cup character with balanced aroma separation — a bit more forgiving during dial-in, ideal for all-round use. The SSP HU Blind Burrs deliver a brighter, clearer profile with present acidity and a punchy character — they demand a bit more care during dial-in but reward you with very clear aromas. Both use the PCS and work for espresso as well as filter.
When does the 98 mm configuration make more sense?
If you already use a collection of 98 mm third-party burrs, or want maximum flexibility in burr choice. The 98 mm configuration doesn't use the PCS — the grinding character is closer to classic 98 mm grinders. For most buyers, we recommend the 102 mm configuration with PCS.
How loud is the Lagom 01?
Comparatively quiet thanks to the brushless DC motor and the CNC aluminum unibody. In our showroom, the Lagom 01 runs during tastings without disrupting conversation.
What does Zero-Calibration mean in practice?
The grinder can be completely disassembled (for cleaning or a burr change, for example) and put back together, and the grind setting sits exactly where it was before. No stickers, no marking with a pen, no re-doing the dial-in. That's a practical difference in everyday use, one that really shows itself only after a few months.
Is the Lagom 01 suitable for filter and pour-over?
Yes. The stepless adjustment covers everything from espresso to French press. With the Mizen Blind Burrs and the PCS, it works as an all-rounder that covers both worlds equally well — that's one of its central strengths compared with espresso-specialized grinders.
Can I see the Lagom 01 before buying?
Yes. In the showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b), the Lagom 01 is in daily use. Bringing your own beans is welcome — PCS behavior and Mizen character show best with your own favorite bean.
How fast is the Lagom 01 delivered in Switzerland?
2 to 4 working days across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. Click and Collect in Bern and Zürich. Financing available through Heylight.
Where can I buy the Option-O Lagom 01 in Switzerland?
At Coffee Coaching Club, as a partner of Option-O. We carry the Lagom 01 in the available burr configurations as well as the matching accessories. Order via coffeecoachingclub.ch, by phone during business hours, or in the showrooms in Bern and Zürich.
Roastery tip
The Lagom 01 is the grinder we reach for in our showroom when we want to present light roasts cleanly. Wild Peach with the 102 mm Mizen Blind Burrs at medium RPM (800–1000) — the peach note comes through clearly, the acidity separates cleanly, and the finish runs longer than on typical 98 mm grinders. Cozy Chocolate at higher RPM (1200–1400) develops a dense chocolate depth, with the PCS providing a somewhat clearer separation of aromas — that's a different character than on the EG-1, neither better nor worse, just different. Nutty Delight as an all-rounder with milk also works well on the Lagom 01, even though the grinder shows its true strength with single origins. That's our recommendation, one of many.
