The shower screen distributes the brew water over the entire surface of the puck. As long as it is clear, you can see this in an even pattern in the bottomless portafilter. If it clogs, a channel forms – and a single pale stream reveals that one side is getting more water than the other.
On the KB90 with its straight-in portafilter this is especially noticeable, because the machine otherwise runs extremely consistently.
A clogged shower screen is usually just blocked with coffee oil and limescale. Remove it, soak it overnight in a solution of Puly Caff Plus cleaning powder, brush it out, check it against the light – once all the holes are evenly bright again, it can go back in. More on this in the cleaning range for machine and grinder. You should replace it if the surface is warped or corroded, or a hole is torn.

For KB90 businesses with high throughput – there, the shower screen is one of the parts that ages fastest. And for anyone who sees an uneven pattern in the bottomless portafilter after backflushing.
While you're at it, renew the group head gasket incl. anti-shock plates and the O-rings for LEVA and KB90. For backflushing you need the blind filter for KB90 together with the rubber for the blind filter. Everything else under La Marzocco accessories and spare parts.
Once a month we photograph the pattern in the bottomless portafilter. If you put the pictures side by side, you can see creeping channelling long before the espresso tastes noticeably off – and you clean the shower screen before habits creep into your grind setting. This is our bar routine from Bern and Zurich, not a manufacturer specification. For dialling in afterwards we use Nutty Delight, Cozy Chocolate for chocolatey notes and Very Nutty for maximum body. All roasts under Coffee beans.
Spare parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are procured to order and cannot be resold after installation or a test fit on the machine. So before ordering, check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or drop us a line and we will check the fit together. Your rights in the case of defective goods remain unaffected.
Cleaning is usually enough. A replacement is needed if the surface is warped, holes are torn or there is corrosion.
In a café, inspect it visually every week when backflushing, and remove and soak it once a month.
Visually, nothing in operation – it identifies the original part. Functionally, what counts is the distribution of the hole pattern.
This shower screen is listed for the KB90. We carry separate versions for other model series – write to us.
