The small screw that can otherwise hold up a repair

It is rarely the big assembly that wrecks a service appointment. It is that one M3 screw that fell into the machine during removal, whose Phillips recess has worn round, or that no longer grips cleanly after twenty years of steam and cleaning agents. Then everything lies dismantled on the workbench and you are missing a part worth fifty centimes.

This is exactly that part: an original La Marzocco screw, M3 with a length of 6 millimetres, Phillips head, stainless steel A2. Part number I.1.060. Short enough not to protrude, and made of rust-proof steel so that it does not corrode in the warm, humid interior of an espresso machine.

When it is time to replace it

The Phillips recess is chewed up and the screwdriver slips. The head shows brown spots or surface rust. The thread no longer tightens evenly, or the screw simply went missing during the last service. In all these cases it pays to replace it straight away – a stripped screw costs far more time next time than it is worth.

Important for installation

The item description does not say where this screw sits. If it is inside the machine, the replacement belongs in professional hands: the machine is first disconnected from the mains, depressurised and allowed to cool. An M3 screw tolerates little torque – anyone who tightens it with a cordless screwdriver will strip the thread in the component, and then the fifty-centime part turns into a real repair.

Who it is for

For service technicians restocking their small-parts assortment, and for anyone who maintains their own machine and does not want to improvise during reassembly. Anyone who has ever fitted a galvanised DIY-store screw in the steam area knows why it should be the stainless version.

What goes with it

The longer siblings in the same range: the M3 × 12 screw with Phillips head and the M3 × 8 screw for pump head and plastic profiles. Also frequently ordered together: the M4 × 8 screw for the housing. You will find all other small parts in the Original spare parts section and under La Marzocco accessories and spare parts.

Workshop tip from Bern and Zurich
This is our routine, not a manufacturer requirement: when dismantling, we place a magnetic tray next to the machine and sort the screws into it by assembly, not in a heap. And we always order small parts like these in twos or threes – the shipping costs more than the screw. Meanwhile, there is usually a pot of Nutty Delight on the go in our workshop; if you prefer it more chocolatey, go for Cozy Chocolate. The full range is under Coffee beans.

No returns
Original spare parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are sourced specifically for each order and cannot be resold after installation or a trial fitting on the machine. So before ordering, check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or drop us a line and we will clarify the fit together. Your rights in the event of defective goods remain unaffected.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get one screw or a set?

You get a single screw. If you need several, simply order the corresponding quantity – it is worth it, because with such small parts shipping makes up the larger share.

How can I tell it is the right one?

The safest way is via part number I.1.060 in your service documentation. Otherwise, measure: 3 millimetre thread diameter, 6 millimetre length under the head, Phillips head. If you are unsure, send us the serial number of your machine and we will check it for you.

Can I use a screw from a DIY store instead?

Same dimensions perhaps, same material rarely. An espresso machine is exposed to moisture, steam and cleaning agents – galvanised steel develops white rust there within months. This screw is stainless steel A2 and stays clean.

Is this screw the same as the M3 × 12?

No. The M3 × 12 is twice as long and has the number I.1.045; this one is I.1.060 with 6 millimetres. A screw that is too long can touch components behind it, one that is too short does not engage enough thread.

Can I pick up the part at your showroom?

Yes. We have two locations: Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and Zurich at Hagenholzstrasse 50b. Drop us a line and we will have it ready for you.
