The transparent cover that protects the water pipe and keeps it visible
On the RE A, a plexiglass cover sits over the water pipe. It does two jobs at once: it keeps splashes and hands away from the hot line while still letting you see what is happening behind it. In a business where several people work at the same machine, both are useful.
Plexiglass is sturdy but sensitive to certain cleaners and to scratches. After years of bar service it is often not broken but clouded – and then it no longer fulfils half of its purpose.
When it is due
Cracks, chipped corners or a broken mounting are the clear case. A broken cover should be replaced, not glued: no glued joint lasts long in this spot.
A cover that has turned cloudy and milky is the second case. This usually comes from harsh cleaners or from wiping dry on a dusty surface.
If the cover no longer sits securely or rattles, either the cover itself is warped or the mounting is worn.

Can I glue a broken cover?
We advise against it. In this spot, heat and moisture act on the glued joint, and nobody wants a loose shard coming off during service.
