Profitec tamping station with ring insert – concrete or aluminium

A short, satisfying sound as the portafilter slides into the notch, and both hands are free for tamping.

A fixed place for the moment before the shot

When tamping, it's not force that matters but straightness. If the portafilter sits at an angle or wobbles, the pressure goes unevenly into the puck, and later the water looks for the easier path. Particle size and evenness determine the quality of the extraction, and evenness starts with how the portafilter stands. This station gives the portafilter a notch to rest in, and the plastic insert on the inner wall holds it steady.

There are two versions to choose from. The black station is made of anodised aluminium, sits on a rubber ring and carries the Profitec item number AC500009-01. The concrete version comes from the Customization Line Concrete and repeats the same shape in a matt, mineral material. Both measure 9.5 centimetres in diameter and 7 centimetres in height, and both can also simply be used as a rest for the portafilter.

A tamping station doesn't automatically make the espresso better; it makes the routine more repeatable. No shot is identical to yesterday's anyway, because the bean, humidity and the person shift, and that's the beautiful thing about it. There's no right and no wrong here. Our opinion is one of many.

Who it's made for

For anyone who wants a fixed height when tamping instead of a counter that reacts differently every time. For anyone short on space, because the station is round and takes up little surface. And for anyone who wants to carry the concrete parts on their machine through consistently.

Matching machines, grinders and more accessories are in the Profitec collection. In Bern and Zurich you can feel the difference between concrete and aluminium in your hand in person, but if you want to buy a tamping station in Switzerland, you can also get it from us directly online.

What goes well with it

Without a tamper, the station is just a rest. For anyone who wants an affordable, precise tamper: the Normcore Spring-Loaded Tamper with a defined pressure point from the Normcore collection. If you want more weight and more elaborate craftsmanship: the tampers from Weber Workshops.

Before that comes the grinder, and that's where the bigger lever lies anyway. For anyone who wants an affordable, precise coffee grinder: the Varia VS3, or the Comandante C40 as a hand grinder. If you want larger burrs: the Varia VS6, the Weber Workshops EG-1 or an Option-O Lagom. Burr sets are like car engines, subjective, and no budget is just a beginning.

Frequently asked questions

How do the two versions differ?

In material and weight. The black station is made of anodised aluminium and stands on a rubber ring, item number AC500009-01. The concrete version belongs to the Customization Line Concrete and has a matt, mineral look. Dimensions, ring insert and notch are the same on both.

Does every portafilter fit?

The station is round, measures 9.5 centimetres in diameter and 7 centimetres in height, and has a plastic insert on the inner wall. It is designed for Profitec portafilters. If you want to use it with another brand, just drop us a line telling us which portafilter you have.

Do I need a specific tamper for it?

No. The station gives the portafilter a firm stand; you're free to choose the tamper. What matters more than the model is that you press straight and evenly.

Can I see the product before buying?

Yes. In our showrooms in Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and in Zurich at Hagenholzstrasse 50b, you can see both versions in person. Buying online remains the normal route, and this text gives you everything you need for it.

How quickly do you deliver, and where to?

We deliver within 2 to 4 working days throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. The quickest way to get answers to your questions is by email to [email protected] or by phone during business hours.

From our coffee roastery

When the routine becomes calmer, you notice the bean more clearly. From our coffee roastery, we recommend Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight: dense, aromatic and full-bodied, with caramel, chocolate and nuts.

For anyone looking for body without any acidity, Very Nutty is the clear choice, and for the curious, Wild Peach brings a fruity, lively note. That's our recommendation, one of many, and any other bean you enjoy works too.
