La Marzocco Pico conical burr set 39 mm – for an even grind again

The burrs are the heart of every grinder. In the Pico, two conical burrs work against each other and cut the bean into particles that should all be as close to the same size as possible. As long as the edges are sharp, the grinder does this quietly, quickly and without you having to think about it.

Over the years, cutting edges turn into crushing edges. The grinder then no longer grinds, it crushes – and you taste it before any scale shows it: the shot runs unevenly, the grind has to be set finer and finer, and the espresso still turns out thin. This set brings the cutting edges back. The part number is 1046.

When it's due

Dull burrs don't announce themselves with a fault, but with a gradual decline. You turn the grind finer step by step, and the extraction time still stays too short. The ground coffee no longer feels even between your fingers; alongside fine powder, it contains visibly coarser pieces.

Then there are the signs you can hear and smell: grinding the same dose takes noticeably longer than before, the grinder gets louder or rattles, and the grounds smell warm instead of like coffee. In the portafilter, the same thing shows up as channeling – the shot runs through faster in one spot than in the rest.

Our documentation for this item doesn't state a throughput in kilograms after which a replacement would be due. So we don't give one here. If you're unsure, send us two photos of the removed burrs and we'll take a look at the edges together.

Important for installation

To replace them, the grinding mechanism has to be opened. This exposes the drive and its supply cable, and after fitting, the burrs have to be aligned with each other. We deliberately don't give step-by-step instructions here.

The reason is the zero point: after every burr change, the point at which the burrs just barely touch has to be found again. If you set it too tight and then run the grinder, you ruin the new edges in seconds. Have a specialist do the replacement – or bring the grinder to us, and we'll take care of it in the workshop.

Who it's for

For anyone who runs a Pico every day and notices that the grinder no longer delivers what it did at the start. That applies to home baristas after a few years just as much as to small businesses, where the same amount goes through in months rather than years.

And for anyone who has taken over a used Pico and doesn't know what the grinder has been through. Fresh burrs are the cheapest way to a defined starting point there.

What goes with it

Parts for the same grinder include the New F. burr set as the newer version, the drive belt Rebuild Kit and the adjusting gear for setting the grind.

On top of the grinder sit the complete bean hopper and the bean hopper lid. For the Swift, we carry the ceramic burrs as a separate item.

The matching categories are La Marzocco Pico and Swift spare parts, La Marzocco accessories and spare parts and service parts. For care: grinder cleaning with Puly Grind.

The workshop tip from Bern and Zurich

In Bern and Zurich, we clean every grinder before we talk about new burrs. Surprisingly often, it's not that the edge is dull, but that the grinding mechanism is clogged with old coffee oils – a portion of grinder cleaning granules and a blown-out grinding mechanism then do more than a new set of burrs. Only when the grinder is clean and the grind still stays uneven do we order burrs. That's our routine from the workshop, not a manufacturer's requirement. For the test shots afterwards, we reach for Nutty Delight and Cozy Chocolate in the workshop, and for maximum body without acidity, Very Nutty; the full selection is in our coffee beans.

No returns

Service parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are sourced to order and cannot be resold after installation or a test fit on the machine. So before ordering, check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or drop us a line and we'll check the fit together. Your rights in the case of defective goods remain unaffected.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell whether the burrs are dull and it's not something else that's sticking?

The simplest test is cleaning. If the grinder runs like it used to after a portion of grinder cleaning granules, it was coffee oils and not the edge. If the grind stays uneven afterwards and the grind setting still has to be unusually fine, that points to the burrs.

What's the difference from the New F. set?

The dealer catalogue lists both sets separately: this one under number 1046, the other as the newer version under number 1060. Our documentation doesn't say how the two versions differ in detail or from which serial number the newer one applies. Send us the serial number of your Pico and we'll clarify it before shipping.

Are both burrs included in the set?

The item name refers to a set of conical burrs. How many parts the manufacturer supplies under number 1046 isn't stated in our documentation, so we don't claim it. If you need to know for sure before ordering, we'll ask for you.

Does the set also fit the Swift or another grinder?

The item name refers exclusively to the Pico. For the Swift, we carry ceramic burrs as a separate item. Our documentation doesn't say whether a version fits beyond that – we don't guess.

Can I see the part in your showroom?

Yes. In Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and in Zurich at Hagenholzstrasse 50b, service parts are on hand, and we'll check together with you whether the version fits your grinder.

Not sure whether the part fits your grinder? Write to us at [email protected] with the model and serial number, and we'll check the fit together. We deliver across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein in 2-4 working days.
