The shaft is the short piece of metal between the control knob on the outside and the potentiometer behind it. It transmits the rotation, nothing more – and that is exactly why you only notice it once it stops doing its job. The knob still turns, may even feel normal, but the machine does not follow the command, or only with a delay.
This happens because the drive at one end is worn out. Over the years, the same narrow surface takes the load with every turn; at some point it is round instead of angular, and the shaft slips. The replacement is a purely mechanical part; part number M529906701 has replaced the older M529906223.
The shaft is due when the knob has noticeable play before anything happens – a few degrees of free travel that were not there before. Likewise, when the knob suddenly turns easily at one point and the setting jumps instead of following smoothly. And of course when it spins freely without anything changing on the machine.

The shaft sits behind the panel, right next to live components. We deliberately do not give step-by-step instructions here: the machine has to be disconnected from the mains and the front opened, which exposes wiring. A qualified technician does this swap in a few minutes – without a workshop, the effort of doing it safely outweighs the benefit.
For service workshops and for owners of an R Nine One who source the part and have their technician install it. If you are not sure whether your machine is the new or the old version: send us the serial number and we will check the fit.
You will find the other parts for the Rocket housing and controls under Rocket accessories and spare parts. The full range is under Original spare parts, and if you are working on the machine anyway, it is worth taking a look at Machine and grinder cleaning.
Our routine from Bern and Zurich – not a manufacturer specification, but what has proven itself in our workshop: when we replace a shaft like this, we first take a photo of the knob position. Sounds trivial, but it saves readjusting, because otherwise the new shaft tends to sit a few degrees off. Then we let the machine warm up with a double shot and taste whether everything is right – usually with Nutty Delight, because it shows deviations in the extraction immediately. For the second round we use Cozy Chocolate or the strong Very Nutty. You will find everything else under Coffee beans.
No returns
Original spare parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are sourced specifically for each order and cannot be resold after installation or a trial fitting on the machine. So before ordering, check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or drop us a line and we will clarify the fit together. Your rights in the event of defective goods remain unaffected.
No. Only the shaft is supplied. If the potentiometer itself is defective, a different part is needed – write to us and we will work out what your machine needs.
This number is the new version and has replaced M529906223. The serial number tells us whether your machine takes it – just send it to us and we will check.
We recommend installation by a qualified technician. The part sits behind the panel close to live wiring.
