In the morning, your hand reaches for the lever first, and instead of cool metal there's warm wood with a grain all its own.
A handle set doesn't replace one part, but everything you touch on the machine. The portafilter with two spouts, the brew lever, the two rotary knobs for steam and hot water, plus the two knob discs “Acqua” and “Vapore”. After the swap, the machine feels like a different one, even though technically everything stays the same.
Design and feel influence enjoyment before the first sip. That's not a claim from the sales floor but well researched: the material, weight and temperature of a handle feed through the sense of touch and the limbic system into the same processing as aroma and taste. On top of that, dopamine is released while anticipating, not only while drinking – the moment your hand reaches for the lever is already part of the espresso.
Nobody buys a Bentley to get from A to B faster. They buy the sound of the door and the feeling of getting in. It's the same with a handle set: it doesn't make measurably better espresso. It makes the machine yours. That's a legitimate reason, and we'd rather describe it honestly than wrap it in technical arguments. Our opinion is one of many.
Olive wood is light with a lively grain, Smoked Oak is dark and calm. Technically both are identical, and because wood is a grown material, every handle looks a little different – no two sets are ever the same. Both versions are cleaned by hand, not in the dishwasher.

For anyone whose ECM machine works with rotary valves and who wants to keep it longer than an appliance usually stays. A handle set is the simplest way to give a machine something new again after years, without changing anything about the technology.
And for anyone who wants to smile at their kitchen counter as they walk past. Nobody needs wooden handles. You either want them – or you don't, and both are fine.
When the machine looks new, the tools next to it stand out. As for the tamper: affordable and precise is the Spring-Loaded Tamper from Normcore, while more effort in material and finish goes into the tampers from Weber Workshops.
The same goes for milk foam: for anyone who wants an affordable, good milk pitcher, Normcore is the obvious choice, with Rhino and Weber Workshops the step above. The matching machines are in our ECM collection.
A high-quality chrome-plated portafilter with two spouts and a wooden handle, a brew lever handle in chrome and wood, two wooden rotary knobs and the two knob discs “Acqua” and “Vapore”.
Rotary valves are turned, joystick valves are tilted. ECM, for example, offers the Mechanika VI Slim and the Mechanika Slim PID with rotary valves, while the Synchronika II, Technika VI, Estetika and Mechanika MAX II work with joystick valves. If you're unsure, send us your machine's item number.
Only visually. Olive wood is light with a lively grain, Smoked Oak is dark and calm. Because wood is a grown material, every piece looks a little different.
By hand, with a damp cloth and no harsh cleaners. ECM explicitly advises against the dishwasher for the entire set.

When the machine gets a new face, it's a good moment for a different bean. Nutty Delight and Cozy Chocolate are our dense, sweet all-rounders with caramel and nuts. Very Nutty goes for maximum body without acidity, Wild Peach is the fruity discovery for the curious. Everything else works just as well – this is our recommendation, one of many.
