Cool metal instead of plastic under your fingers, and suddenly the turning motion carries a different weight.
There are parts of a grinder that are touched every day and still rarely get attention. The gear ring is one of them. On the ECM S-64 it comes in plastic as standard; this one is made of stainless steel and replaces it.
ECM names three points: greater stability, longer durability and a more refined look. The swap itself is uncomplicated. It changes nothing in the grinding mechanism – particle size and evenness remain a matter of the burrs and the setting, and burr sets are like car engines: subjective, there is no best one.
What does change is the feel. Metal feels different from plastic – cooler, heavier, more precise. Design and feel influence enjoyment before the first sip arrives, and if you stand at the same grinder every morning, you notice that kind of thing. Nobody needs it. You want it – or you don't. Our opinion is one of many.
On some ECM grinders in the 64 series, a stainless steel gear ring is already part of the standard equipment: on the S-Automatik 64 with the powder-coated anthracite housing and on the V-Titan 64. If you have one of these grinders, you don't need it – if you have an S-64 in stainless steel, this is how you retrofit it.

For anyone with an ECM S-64 who wants to keep their grinder longer than a device usually stays around. A metal part lasts longer than a plastic one, and it looks better too.
And for anyone who likes tinkering with their grinder anyway. No budget is just a beginning – a grinder grinds just as well with a plastic ring; this is about material and feel.
You'll find more parts for your grinder under coffee grinder accessories and spare parts, and the whole field in our electric espresso grinders. Affordable and precise there: the VS3 from the Varia collection; more elaborate: the VS6, the EG-1 from Weber Workshops or a Lagom from Option-O.
Because a grinder only works as well as you guide it, a coffee scale belongs alongside: compact and reliable from Normcore, with app, flow-rate display and Bluetooth from Acaia. With it, you describe extraction by brew ratio instead of seconds – 1:2 is the usual starting point.
ECM lists it as an add-on for the ECM S-64 espresso grinder, where it replaces the standard plastic ring. If you're unsure, send us your grinder's item number and we'll give you a definite answer.
ECM names greater stability, longer durability and a more refined look. It changes nothing about the grinding mechanism or the quality of the grounds – that remains down to the burrs and the setting.
Yes. On the ECM S-Automatik 64 with the anthracite housing and on the ECM V-Titan 64, a stainless steel gear ring is part of the standard equipment.
ECM describes it as a simple swap. If you'd like some help with it, get in touch with us.

A grinder only shows its character with a bean that brings body. Nutty Delight and Cozy Chocolate are our dense, sweet recommendations for this, with nuts, caramel and chocolate. Very Nutty goes for maximum body without any acidity, Wild Peach is the fruity discovery for the curious. Our recommendation, one of many.
