ECM/Profitec water tank adapter – retrofit kit for the Brita Aroma-C water filter

Fresh water that tastes of nothing but water – and then of the coffee it's meant to carry.

Filtered water isn't a must. Some taps in Switzerland already deliver very good water, others less so. Whether you retrofit is up to you – our view on it is one of many.

What this set does

With this adapter, you fit the Brita Aroma-C water filter directly into the water tank of your espresso machine. The set consists of the screw fitting and the attachment for the filter cartridge; the stainless steel nozzle in the tank is essential for this. It can be used on machines with either a vibration pump or a rotary pump.

Why it makes a difference is quickly told: water makes up more than ninety percent of an espresso. It's the solvent for the more than 800 compounds in coffee, and its mineral content helps decide which of them make it into the cup at all. 50 to 100 mg/l is considered a good range – water that's too soft makes the shot taste flat, water that's too hard binds aroma and deposits limescale in the boiler.

A filter in the tank works on both ends of this equation: it removes hardness minerals before they reach the boiler, and it smooths the taste of the water itself. What you then perceive in the cup arises largely retronasally – aroma compounds rise to the olfactory mucosa as you swallow. Less interference in the water means more room for sweetness, caramel and nuttiness.

Who this set is for

For everyone in Switzerland whose machine still runs without a filter holder in the tank and who'd like to change that. For everyone in regions with harder water who wants to protect the boiler. And for everyone who'd like to approach their water more mindfully without bringing a reverse osmosis system into the house straight away. Installation is simple: check the nozzle, fit the adapter, insert the cartridge.

What goes with it

The filter cartridges themselves are in our Brita collection. If you're replacing the tank at the same time, you'll find the matching designs in the ECM collection and at Profitec. For looking after the group head, everything is in machine and grinder cleaning. And because good water only shows what it can do with an even grind: affordable and precise, the Varia VS3 from our coffee grinders; with more effort, the EG-1 from Weber Workshops.

Frequently asked questions

Does the adapter fit my machine?

It's designed for all ECM machines from the IV series onwards – so not for the Technika and Mechanika II and III – as well as for the Synchronika, Classika II and Classika PID, and for all Profitec machines. The stainless steel nozzle in the water tank is a requirement. If in doubt, send your machine's item number to us at [email protected].

Is the filter cartridge included?

No, the set contains the screw fitting and the adapter. You order the Brita Aroma-C cartridge separately and change it depending on water hardness and usage.

Does it also work with a rotary pump?

Yes. The adapter can be used on machines with either a vibration pump or a rotary pump.

Why is filtered water worth it at all?

Water makes up more than ninety percent of an espresso. A mineral content of 50 to 100 mg/l is considered the ideal range. A filter holds back hardness minerals, which protects the boiler and lets more sweetness and body come through in the cup.

Can I see the product before buying?

Yes. In our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) you can see the part in person and go through with us whether it suits your setup.

How long does delivery take?

2 to 4 working days to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Click and Collect in Bern and Zurich Oerlikon is also possible.

Roastery tip

Soft, clean water makes dense roasts taste rounder. From our coffee roastery, Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight run through full-bodied, dense and round. If you're after maximum body without any acidity, stay with Very Nutty; if you're looking for a fruity experience, Wild Peach lets you discover a lively peach note. That's our recommendation – one of many. Any other bean you enjoy works just as well.
