Lelit VIP knock drawer, satin finish – stainless steel knock drawer with accessory compartment

A short knock against the rubber-coated bar, the puck drops softly into the drawer, and all stays quiet on the work surface.

A knock drawer is the piece of furniture beneath the espresso ritual. It sits flat, takes the coffee grounds and visually disappears, because it belongs to the machine instead of standing next to it. The housing is brushed stainless steel with a satin finish and has holes that let condensation escape – otherwise warm, damp coffee grounds in a sealed container would quickly turn musty. The inner container can be removed and put in the dishwasher.

The knock bar is solid and rubber-coated. That's not a minor detail but the reason the knock feels pleasant: the rubber absorbs the energy instead of sending it back into your wrist and the portafilter as a hard clack. The feet are rubber too, non-slip and stain-resistant, so nothing wanders and nothing gets scratched on the counter.

There's also a magnetic accessory compartment that can be attached at the side or the back, depending on how your space looks. A microfibre cloth and a wooden brush with natural bristles are included and have their place there. And because the drawer is built flat and sturdy, a Lelit grinder can stand directly on top – two appliances become one unit.

Why this is more than tidiness: the morning routine is a ritual, and rituals work before the first sip. Dopamine is released while anticipating, not only while enjoying – so a routine that works without searching and without detours is part of the experience. Whether that's worth a drawer to you is your decision. Nobody needs it; you want it. Our opinion is one of many.

Who it's for

For anyone whose machine and grinder stand side by side with little room in between. The drawer wins back space, because the grinder sits on top and the coffee grounds disappear underneath. And for anyone who pulls several shots in a row and doesn't want to walk to the bin after each one – 70 pucks last a long time.

It isn't tied to Lelit. Any portafilter can be knocked out on it, regardless of brand and diameter. More formats are in the knock boxes and knock-out containers collection.

What goes with it

If the grinder sits on top, the selection is worth a look: affordable and precise with the Varia VS3, or the Comandante C40 as a hand grinder; more with the Varia VS6, the Weber Workshops EG-1 or the Option-O Lagom – all in the coffee grinders collection. Burr sets are like car engines: subjective, there's no single best.

The rest of the routine also finds room on the space you've gained. A tamper presses the bed level – affordable and precise at Normcore, with higher demands on material at Weber Workshops, both in the Tamper collection. Add a scale: Normcore for the affordable, precise route, Acaia for app, flow-rate display and Bluetooth, to be found among the coffee scales. And the matching portafilter is under portafilters and bottomless portafilters.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with every machine and every portafilter?

Yes. You knock out on the rubber bar, and it isn't limited to one diameter. The drawer works with Lelit just as well as with any other espresso machine.

How much does it hold?

Up to 70 pucks of 14 grams each. At two to three espressos a day, that means several weeks before it needs emptying.

Can my grinder really stand on it?

All Lelit coffee grinders are designed for it. With other brands, the footprint decides – just drop us a line with your model and we'll look at it together.

How do I clean it?

The inner container comes out and can go in the dishwasher. Wipe the housing with a damp cloth; the holes make sure no moisture is left standing.

Can I see the product before buying?

Yes. You can see it in person in Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and in Zurich at Hagenholzstrasse 50b. Delivery to Switzerland and Liechtenstein takes 2 to 4 working days.

From the roastery

If you fill a drawer that holds 70 pucks, you grind a lot – and then a bean that runs calmly day after day is worth it. Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight are our main recommendation for this: dense, aromatic, full-bodied. If you're after maximum body with no acidity at all, go for Very Nutty, and if you want to discover something fruity, Wild Peach. That's our recommendation, one of many.
