Profitec wooden tamping station – portafilter holder made of walnut

Warm walnut under the edge of your hand as the portafilter slides into the recess and comes to rest.

A block of wood that frees up both hands

This station is a solid block of walnut with a round bore for the portafilter and a notch on the side where the handle sits. A rubber ring on the bottom keeps the block from wandering on the worktop. On the front, a small Profitec badge, nothing else. Profitec offers it as a limited edition.

When tamping, it's not force that matters but straightness. If the portafilter sits at an angle or slips away, the pressure goes unevenly into the puck, and later the water looks for the easier path through the coffee grounds. Particle size and evenness determine the quality of the extraction, and evenness starts with how the portafilter stands. The station gives you a fixed height and a steady base; your hands do the rest.

It doesn't automatically make the espresso better; it makes the routine calmer. No shot is identical to yesterday's anyway, because the bean, humidity and the person shift every day, and that's exactly what's beautiful about it. There's no right and no wrong. Our opinion is one of many.

Difference from the round tamping station

Profitec also offers a round tamping station with a plastic ring insert, available in concrete and in black anodised aluminium. The wooden version is a different piece: an angular body, walnut instead of metal or mineral, no ring insert, a rubber ring instead of a rubber foot. If you'd like the round shape and the ring insert, you'll find it in the tamping station collection.

Who it's made for

For anyone who wants a fixed height when tamping instead of a counter that reacts differently every time. For anyone who prefers wood on the worktop to metal. And for anyone who already has walnut handles on their machine and wants to carry the line through consistently.

Matching machines, grinders and more accessories are in the Profitec collection. In Bern and Zurich you can feel the difference between wood and metal in your hand in person, and if you want to buy a tamping station in Switzerland, you can also get it from us directly online.

What goes well with it

Without a tamper, the station is just a rest. For anyone who wants an affordable, precise tamper: the Normcore Spring-Loaded Tamper with a defined pressure point from the Normcore collection. If you want more weight and more elaborate craftsmanship: the tampers from Weber Workshops.

Before that comes the grinder, and that's where the bigger lever lies. For anyone who wants an affordable, precise coffee grinder: the Varia VS3, or the Comandante C40 as a hand grinder. If you want larger burrs: the Varia VS6, the Weber Workshops EG-1 or an Option-O Lagom. Burr sets are like car engines, subjective, and no budget is just a beginning.

Frequently asked questions

How does it differ from the round tamping station?

In the body and the material. This version is an angular block of walnut with a round recess and a rubber ring on the bottom, item number Pr5120. The round station is available in concrete and in black anodised aluminium and also has a plastic ring insert on the inner wall.

Does every portafilter fit?

The recess is designed for 58 mm Profitec portafilters, and the side notch takes the handle. Profitec doesn't give any dimensions for the bore. If you want to use it with a different brand, just drop us a line saying which portafilter you have.

Do I need a specific tamper for it?

No. The station gives the portafilter a firm stand; you're free to choose the tamper. What matters more than the model is that you press straight and evenly.

How do I care for the wood?

Wiping it with a damp cloth and drying it is enough. Walnut doesn't like the dishwasher or standing water.

Can I see the product before buying?

Yes. In our showrooms in Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and in Zurich at Hagenholzstrasse 50b, you can see it in person. Buying online remains the normal route, and this text gives you everything you need for it.

How quickly do you deliver, and where to?

We deliver within 2 to 4 working days throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. The quickest way to get answers to your questions is by email to [email protected] or by phone during business hours.

From our coffee roastery

When the routine becomes calmer, you notice the bean more clearly. From our coffee roastery, we recommend Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight: dense, aromatic and full-bodied, with caramel, chocolate and nuts.

For anyone looking for body without any acidity, Very Nutty is the clear choice, and for the curious, Wild Peach brings a fruity, lively note. That's our recommendation, one of many, and any other bean you enjoy works too.
