With an inner diameter of almost seventy millimetres, this is no longer a small sealing ring but a proper ring – and on a grinder it has a dual role. It seals so that no ground coffee gets where it doesn't belong, and at the same time it sits as a soft intermediate piece between two hard components. EPDM is the right material for this: elastic, resistant to ageing and unaffected by the oils released by fresh coffee.
You only see this ring once the assembly is open. And that is exactly when you should take a look at it: if it has become hard, flattened or glossy and porous, it no longer seals. An old O-ring never becomes round again, even if it looks harmless on the workbench.
Fine ground coffee escapes from a joint where it shouldn't be. The ring no longer stretches when you remove it, but tears instead. It has a permanent flattening from the groove or shows fine transverse cracks when you bend it between your fingers. Or the assembly is open anyway – then you replace it, because otherwise you end up taking it apart twice.

The ring sits inside the grinder. Before any work, the unit is disconnected from the mains – this applies to a grinder in particular, because a set of burrs doesn't negotiate. We don't provide step-by-step instructions here: the assembly has to be opened, and anyone who shifts the grind setting or tilts the burrs in the process ends up with more work afterwards than before. We recommend having the replacement carried out by a qualified technician as part of a service.
For roasteries and businesses with a Swan that replace their seals on a scheduled basis, and for service companies that don't want to start looking for a ring like this only when the grinder is already standing open on the bench. An O-ring costs little – taking things apart a second time costs time.
You'll find further items for the grinder in the Coffee grinder accessories and spare parts section; the unit itself is the La Marzocco Swan. From the same assembly come the extruder ejector cone for the Swan and the holder for the inner burr. All other small parts are in the Original spare parts section.
From our workshop in Bern and Zurich: We never pull large O-rings dry over an edge; instead we briefly moisten them with water – no oil, no grease, because neither has any place in the coffee path. And we lay the old ring next to the new one before throwing it away: when you see both side by side, you immediately understand how much the old one has shrunk. Our own routine, not a manufacturer specification. After reassembly we grind two rounds of sacrificial coffee, then the Very Nutty goes into the hopper, because it clearly shows changes in the grind profile. Better suited to milk is the Nutty Delight; the full selection is in Coffee beans.
No returns
Original spare parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are sourced specifically for each order and cannot be resold once they have been installed or test-fitted on the unit. So before ordering, check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or drop us a quick message and we'll clarify the fit together. Your statutory rights regarding defective goods remain unaffected.
Our documentation names the unit, but not the individual groove. We don't make up information. Send us the serial number of your Swan and we'll work out the position together.
That is the material designation as it appears in our documentation. What matters for you are the dimensions and the part number H.1.053.
The dimensions are a standard size, the material is not. For food contact and for the temperature in the grinder, we recommend the original part.
The price is per piece. Simply order the quantity you need – many businesses keep a spare ring in stock.
