Normcore Pressure Regulated Tamper
The moment the spring clicks. Gentle, precise, always the same. You press, feel the defined resistance, hear the soft click – and you know: this tamp will be like the last. And like the next.
Pressure regulated, because consistency is tasteable
Tamping is the most invisible variable in espresso preparation. Too little pressure, the puck breaks. Too much, the water channels. The hand of the day is never the same – sometimes stronger, sometimes weaker, sometimes more playful, sometimes more tired. This is where the spring-loaded mechanism comes in: it removes the human variable from the equation and hands it over to a calibrated spring.
Three interchangeable springs are included – 15 lb, 25 lb and 30 lb. This way, you can find the pressure that suits your setup and stick with it. The central shaft guides the tamper exactly in the middle of the basket, the self-leveling plate rests on the rim of the basket. Tamping crooked becomes mechanically impossible. What remains: an espresso that is comparable from shot to shot – and thus the only thing that really helps with dial-in.
Our observation: Once you've worked with a pressure-regulated tamper, you don't want to go back. Not because it necessarily tamps better, but because there's one less variable to think about. Enjoyment over perfection – but consistency doesn't hurt either. Our opinion, one of many.

Which size for which machine
The tamper must match the portafilter basket size, otherwise the pressure ring will not apply cleanly. Seven options cover the common machines.
45.5 mm for Flair Pro and Flair Pro 2 Espresso Maker. Also suitable for 54-mm-to-45.5-mm step-down baskets.
49 mm for Flair 49 and Flair 49 Pro. Also fits 58-to-49-mm and 57.5-to-49-mm step-down baskets from Normcore.
51 mm for La Pavoni Europiccola and Professional Millennium (machines from year of manufacture 2000, 60-mm brew group).
51.5 mm for machines with slightly larger 51-mm baskets.
53.3 mm for Breville/Sage machines with 54-mm portafilters: Barista Express, Pro, Touch, Bambino Plus, Infuser, Duo-Temp Pro.
57.5 mm for Ascaso machines as well as for Lelit Anita, Diana and Anna with 57-mm portafilters.
58.5 mm for the vast majority. Fits standard 58-mm portafilters – La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Bezzera (newer models), Lelit, commercial setups. Compatible with VST and IMS precision baskets.
Who is this tamper for?
For anyone who wants consistency without having to reinvent their tamping technique every morning. For home setups where multiple people tamp on the same setup – the machine will taste the same for both. For cafes with changing shifts. And for anyone who simply likes to hear when something fits: the click at the pressure point is its own little anchor in the espresso ritual.
If you prefer the classic feel of pressure by hand, a traditional tamper might be more suitable. Both are legitimate. No espresso police – just a tool that either suits you or not.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which tamper size fits my machine?
Standard machines like La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit (58 mm) and most commercial machines need 58.5 mm. Breville/Sage machines with 54-mm portafilters need 53.3 mm. Ascaso and Lelit Anita/Diana/Anna with 57-mm portafilters need 57.5 mm. La Pavoni Europiccola/Professional Millennium 51 mm. Flair 49 and Flair 49 Pro 49 mm. Flair Pro and Flair Pro 2 need 45.5 mm. If you are unsure: write to us at office@coffeecoachingclub.ch with your machine model, we will respond during business hours.
Which spring should I use?
The medium 25 lb spring is pre-installed, which works for most. 15 lb for very fine grind and lighter roasts, 30 lb for stronger pressure and denser pucks. All three springs are included and can be tried out – that's part of the tool.
How does pressure-regulated tamping improve things technically?
It removes the daily variation from the pressure. The spring always applies the same force once it triggers. The self-leveling plate also ensures an even surface. The result is not necessarily a better espresso – but a comparable one. This is exactly what helps with dial-in.
Can I see the tamper before buying?
Yes, in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Online ordering is the primary method, delivery throughout Switzerland and Liechtenstein in 2–4 business days. Anyone who fancies a showroom visit is welcome.
Do I need to maintain the tamper?
Hand wash with warm water, no dishwasher, no harsh cleaners. The spring mechanism does not like moisture for extended periods. Store dry, that's it.
Roastery Tip: With a pressure-regulated tamper, trying our full-bodied beans is particularly worthwhile. Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight require a cleanly pressed puck to fully develop their chocolate and caramel notes. If you're looking for maximum body without acidity, Very Nutty is for you. And for the curious, Wild Peach is a fruity journey of discovery. But that's our recommendation – try what appeals to you.
