Comandante is a German manufacturer of premium hand grinders with its own Nitro Blade burr set. The C40 MK4 has established itself worldwide as the specialty filter standard – in cafés, roasteries, competitions, and for travel. Coffee Coaching Club carries the current Comandante range directly from stock.
What makes Comandante unique
Three characteristics define the brand. First, the Nitro Blade burr set: a conical burr set made of hardened steel, developed in Germany, that delivers a particularly narrow particle distribution – noticeable aroma clarity for filter coffee, AeroPress, pour-over. Second, Made-in-Germany engineering: every Comandante is manufactured in Germany, with durable components and a repairable design. Third, travel suitability: small, robust, without electricity – Comandante is part of the standard setup for many specialty coffee travelers.

Comandante C40 MK4 – the Specialty Filter Standard
The hero grinder for pour-over, AeroPress, French press, cold brew. Nitro Blade burr set, click-accurate grind adjustment (typically 18–25 clicks for filter), bean capacity approx. 40 g, glass or polymer container, several color configurations. Ideal for our light specialty roasts Wild Peach and Bright Cassis.
Comandante C60 Baracuda – XL Capacity
The bigger sister with a larger bean capacity (approx. 60 g) and a correspondingly longer burr set. For home setups with larger brews, V60 02, Chemex, French press 1 liter.
Comandante X25 Trailmaster – Outdoor Specialist
Robust aluminum housing, optimized for camping, hiking, and outdoor setups. Compact form factor, durable construction.
Red Clix and Espresso Clix – finer grind settings
Special axles for finer grind adjustment – Red Clix (RX-axle) allows finer grind steps, Espresso Clix enables espresso grind sizes on the C40. Note: Comandante is primarily optimized for filter; with Espresso Clix it also works for espresso on lever machines (Aram, Flair, Superkop), but for regular home espresso on pump machines, dedicated espresso hand grinders like 1Zpresso K-Plus or J-Max are usually more suitable.

C40 MK4 or C60 Baracuda?
C40 MK4: Standard size for 1–2 cups (40g beans). C60 Baracuda: XL for Chemex, V60 02 with more cups, French Press 1L (60g beans). For travel: C40. For family brews: C60.
Which grind size for what?
On C40 typically: Espresso (with Espresso Clix) ~10–15 clicks. AeroPress 15–20 clicks. V60 18–23 clicks. Chemex 22–27 clicks. French Press 28–32 clicks. Cold Brew 35–40 clicks. Adjust based on bean freshness and burr set age.
Does Comandante work for espresso?
On pump machines: possible with Espresso Clix, but Comandante is primarily optimized for filter. On lever machines (Flair, Aram, Superkop): works very well, as there is less demand for grind pressure. For regular espresso on pump machines: 1Zpresso K-Plus or J-Max or Kinu M47 are usually more suitable.
How long does the burr set last?
With normal home use, typically for years. Nitro Blade burr set is designed for durability. If grind quality noticeably deteriorates, replacement is possible via Comandante service.
How do I care for Comandante?
After use, shake out remaining beans, occasionally clean with a brush, do not immerse burr set in water. For intensive use, clean burr set with a brush or mini vacuum every few months.
Can I see Comandante live before buying?
Yes. In the showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b), we carry the most important Comandante models and color configurations. Bringing your own beans is welcome.
