    Organic Hojicha Uji – Matcha7

A warm, gently smoky aroma rises the moment hot water meets the fine, brownish powder. Not a grassy green, but a deep brown that recalls roasted nuts and warm caramel from the very first stir. The first sip is round and gentle, with a warmth that suits a quiet moment more than a wide-awake start to the day.

This Hojicha comes from the same fields in Uji, near Kyoto, where our Matcha grows too. After the first harvest in spring, the tea plants receive a balancing prune, and it's exactly these leaves that are then gently roasted to a medium roast and finely ground. The roasting makes the difference: it turns the green freshness into a warm, round aroma with soft roasted and hazelnut notes, breaking down much of the bitterness still held in the unroasted leaf.

That's exactly why Hojicha can handle hotter water than its green relative, up to 80 degrees, without turning harsh. The roasted compounds need that warmth to unfold, while water that's too hot quickly draws too much bitterness out of unroasted Matcha. And as with any aroma, smell and taste are barely separable: much of what we perceive as a nutty, gently sweet roasted aroma only forms retronasally, when the aromatic compounds rise to the olfactory epithelium as we swallow.

Because roasting breaks down much of the stimulating compounds, this Hojicha is naturally low in caffeine – a tea that still has a place in the late afternoon or evening, without disturbing your sleep. Whether whisked up on its own or as a mild latte, there's no right or wrong here, only what tastes good to you. Like any tea, this one never tastes exactly the same twice, because water, mood and how you're feeling on any given day keep changing. That's not a limitation, that's what makes it beautiful.

    How to Prepare It

For one serving, add one to two level spoonfuls of Hojicha powder, roughly two grams, to a bowl or cup. Using a little water at up to 80 degrees, first stir the powder smooth so no clumps remain, then whisk it with a bamboo whisk or a milk frother until a fine texture forms. On its own, the Hojicha shows its full roasted warmth; with frothed milk, dairy or plant-based, it becomes softer and rounder – in our view, oat milk pairs especially well with the roasted notes.

    Who This Hojicha Is For

For anyone looking for a quiet moment that won't keep you wired – in the late afternoon, after a meal, or as a gentle close to the day. For anyone who wants to discover what roasted aromas feel like beyond coffee, without giving up the ritual of whisking. And for anyone who loves Matcha but occasionally wants a lower-caffeine, warmer variation on it. Our take here is just one of many – in the end, your own taste decides.

    The Right Tools

Hojicha, too, unfolds most beautifully with the right accessories. You'll find bamboo whisks, bowls, and complete sets, from an affordable set to elaborate ceramics, in our Tea Accessories Collection. To make sure the water reliably hits the right temperature, it's worth a look at the kettles in our Varia Collection, from the Varia AURA Standard to the AURA FLUX with precise, degree-accurate temperature control. And for an especially creamy texture with milk, a milk frother from our Subminimal Collection helps.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What water temperature works best for Hojicha?

Up to 80 degrees. Because roasting has already broken down much of the bitterness, Hojicha can handle hotter water than unroasted Matcha without turning harsh.

How much Hojicha do I use per serving?

About one to two level spoonfuls, roughly two grams, per serving. A 60-gram bag gives you around 30 servings this way.

    Does Hojicha still contain caffeine?

Yes, but noticeably less than green tea or Matcha. Roasting breaks down much of the stimulating compounds, which makes Hojicha a gentler choice later in the day too.

Does this Hojicha work for a latte too?

Yes. Whisk the powder smooth with a little water, then top up with warm, frothed milk, dairy or plant-based. The roasted notes stay well present.

What's the best way to store Hojicha?

Cool, dark, and well sealed, away from air and moisture. That's how the roasted aromas stay fresh the longest.

Can I see the Hojicha in person before buying?

Our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) show a wide selection, but not our entire range – the display changes. Drop us a quick line at [email protected] before your visit, and we will check whether the product you have in mind is currently there. Delivery takes 2 to 4 business days, throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. If you have any questions, reach us during business hours or by email at [email protected].

As a coffee roastery, we like to think in roast levels, and it's no coincidence that Hojicha's warm, nutty notes remind us of well-roasted coffee. If you're looking for that same roasted warmth in your cup of coffee, our dense, full-bodied roasts like Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight could suit you well. That's our recommendation, one of many.
