La Marzocco Linea Micra – Compact dual boiler espresso machine from Florence

The paddle touches your fingers as you push it left, slowly, feeling the rotary pump come alive – not as a sound, but as a fine vibration in your fingertips, barely perceptible. The kitchen is quiet. It's half past six, the light is just reaching over the rooftops, and the first drop releases from the bottomless portafilter. Honey-coloured. Thick. It falls into the pre-warmed cup and trails a thin thread behind it, and in this moment you already know: this one will be good. The aroma reaches you first – chocolate, caramel, something nutty that only opens once the crema settles. The first sip is warm and soft and dense, and behind it comes that sweetness that only appears when temperature and pressure and bean find each other the way they should.

Five minutes is all the Micra needed. From switching on to here. In those five minutes you ground the beans and the aroma spread through the kitchen like a quiet invitation, then you distributed the coffee, tamped, and locked in the portafilter – and now you're standing here with a cup in your hand that's better than what most cafés serve. Not because you're a better barista. But because the machine standing on your kitchen counter was built in Scarperia near Florence, with the same brewing technology that works in the best cafés in the world. Just small enough for your home.

Saturated group head – why the first shot tastes just as good as the third

What you taste in the cup begins inside the machine. And here the Micra does something fundamentally different from most machines in this size class. In an E61 group head – the standard at Rocket, ECM, Profitec – hot water circulates through a heavy metal head. That takes time. Twenty minutes, sometimes longer, before the temperature is truly stable. The first shot in the morning often tastes different from the third, because the metal hasn't warmed through evenly yet.

In the Micra, brew boiler and brew head merge into a single, electrically heated block. La Marzocco calls this an “integrated grouphead” – the same principle as in their commercial machines, just more compact, and you feel the result immediately: the first shot in the morning has the same body, the same sweetness, the same clarity as the third. No guessing, no flushing to warm things up, no “the machine still needs to warm up.” Five minutes after switching on, you're right where you want to be. What does that mean for taste? Coffee contains over 800 compounds, and which of them end up in your cup depends on how evenly the water flows through the coffee puck. Temperature swings of one or two degrees decide whether a shot is round and sweet – or flat and undefined. The saturated group head gives you that stability. And you taste it. In our roastery we observe that saturated group heads deliver a more refined aromatic picture than E61 – regardless of whether it's a single boiler, heat exchanger, or dual boiler. Others see it differently, and that's fine. Our opinion is one among many.

Rotary pump – quiet in the morning

At half past six in the morning, when the house is still asleep, it makes a difference whether your machine hums or rattles. The vibration pump found in most machines of this class sounds like a small drill, while the Micra's rotary pump is barely audible. What you feel is the pressure – even, linear, without fluctuations. The water enters the puck calmly, saturates it evenly, and releases the aromas layer by layer. The extraction becomes clearer, the body denser, the cup cleaner. That's physics you can taste – even if you're not interested in why.

Compact enough for real kitchens

29 cm wide. 34 cm tall. The Micra fits under kitchen cabinets that other dual boilers would have to duck under. La Marzocco moved the water tank to the front instead of the top – two litres, simply accessible from the front, without shifting or lifting the machine. That sounds like a technical detail, but in everyday life it decides whether a machine becomes part of your morning or stands in the way. 19 kilograms – heavy enough to stand stable when you lock in the portafilter, light enough for two people to carry into the kitchen. Eight colours: white, black, grey, Brushed Steel, cream, red, yellow and blue. And yes – colour plays a role. Because this machine stands on your counter, every day, and because the feeling that creates is part of the experience. Nobody buys a Bentley because it drives faster than a Mercedes. It's similar with the Micra: it's not just the technology. It's what it does to the space it stands in.

The app – more control than any dial

The La Marzocco Home App controls everything the Micra can do. Brew temperature to the exact degree – one degree more emphasises body, chocolate, caramel. One degree less opens up fruity notes, acidity, complexity. Steam boiler pressure in three stages. Pre-infusion. And the schedule: you set the app so the machine heats up before your alarm goes off, so you get up and it's ready. No waiting. The dopamine hit of anticipation – knowing the coffee is coming – already starts on the way to the kitchen.

What you should know: temperature can only be set via the app, not on the machine itself. There's no display, no dial. For anyone who likes apps, that's elegant. For anyone who'd rather adjust things on the machine itself, that's a point worth knowing beforehand. If you want to feel it yourself before you decide, get in touch and we will check whether the Micra is currently on display in one of our showrooms.

Who the Micra is for

Nobody needs a La Marzocco. That's important to say. There are wonderful machines for less money that make excellent espresso – an ECM Classika, a Rocket Appartamento, a Flair 58+2. The Micra is a choice, not a necessity. And that's exactly what defines it.

Whoever wants a Micra knows why. Maybe it's the technology – dual boiler, saturated group, rotary pump, all in a housing that fits on any kitchen counter. Maybe it's the ritual – the paddle, the aroma, the quiet of the rotary pump, the three minutes in the morning that belong only to you. Maybe it's the feeling that arises when you walk into the kitchen and this machine is standing there – the light falls on the stainless steel, the lines are clean and calm, and you know: this is mine. This is my morning. That's reason enough. Whoever wants it, knows why.

What goes with it

The grinder decides. Pre-ground coffee loses in minutes what the bean built up over months – over 800 volatile compounds that dissipate rapidly after grinding. What makes up your retronasal aroma experience – that moment when you swallow and the compounds rise through your throat to the olfactory epithelium – begins at the grinder. For anyone who wants a reliable, affordable grinder: Varia coffee grinders – we import them directly to Switzerland. For anyone who wants maximum precision: Weber Workshops or Option-O. Extraction by weight ratio (1:2 as a starting point, not a rule) delivers the most reliable results. For that, a scale – affordable: Normcore. With app and flow-rate display: Acaia. More background on the sensory science of pressure, temperature and grind size is available in our Sensory World. Or check out the Micra vs. Mini R vs. GS3 comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the La Marzocco Linea Micra cost?

We don't publish the price of the Linea Micra. You get it immediately and without obligation: by email via the price request above, by phone on 076 789 15 79, by email to [email protected] or in our showrooms in Bern and Zurich. The amount of CHF 1.00 on this page is the personal consultation and configuration session, not the machine price.

How do I order the Linea Micra?

Personally – by email to [email protected], by phone during business hours, or in our showrooms in Bern and Zurich. We'll sort out colour, configuration and delivery together.

Can I see the La Marzocco Linea Micra live before I buy?

That depends on whether the Linea Micra is on display right now. Our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) show a wide selection, but not our entire range – it is too large for that, and the display changes. Drop us a quick line at [email protected] before your visit, and we will check whether the Linea Micra is currently there.

Do I need a separate grinder?

Yes. Freshly ground makes the biggest difference you can make. We're happy to advise you – from the Varia VS3 to the Weber EG-1, depending on what matters to you and what appeals to you.

How long does delivery take in Switzerland?

2–4 business days, Swiss-wide and to Liechtenstein. Click and Collect available in Bern and Zurich at any time.

Where can I buy the La Marzocco Linea Micra in Switzerland?

At Coffee Coaching Club – La Marzocco partner and coffee roastery. Via coffeecoachingclub.ch, in our showrooms in Bern and Zurich, or by phone. Personal advice, delivery Swiss-wide.

Roastery tip

When we fire up the Micra in the showroom, we usually reach for our Cozy Chocolate. There's a moment with the first sip – the cup is warm, the crema has just settled, and then comes that dense chocolate with a sweetness that slowly spreads across the tongue. That's no coincidence: the thermal stability of the saturated group head draws exactly the compounds that create body and warmth out of medium roasts. Nutty Delight works wonderfully with steamed milk – nutty, velvety, round, as if it were made for it. And for anyone in the mood to discover something: Wild Peach brings a lively acidity that's real fun with the Micra's precise temperature control – fruity, vibrant, a shot that surprises. That's our recommendation, one of many.
