Twelve teeth that set the ram in motion
In the drive of an automatic tamper, the rotation of the motor is transmitted through gears before it reaches the ram as a linear force. This spur gear has twelve teeth and is made of brass – a material that runs more quietly than steel and, if something goes wrong, tends to give way itself rather than take the mating gear with it.
That is exactly why it is a part that will need replacing at some point. The teeth wear round, the drive gets louder, and if a tooth breaks off, the tamper stops mid-cycle. If you are planning to open the unit anyway, replace the gear at the same time.
When it is due
It is due when the drive has become louder or makes grinding noises, when the ram jerks or does not travel smoothly, when teeth are rounded, broken or worn in, or when brass debris collects inside the housing.

Important for installation
The gear sits in the drive, i.e. inside the unit and close to live parts. The unit is disconnected from the mains before opening. The tooth engagement and the backlash to the mating gear determine the service life of both gears – this needs to be checked before the housing is closed again. We deliberately do not give step-by-step instructions here.

When a brass gear is worn, we always look at the mating gear too. A new gear that meshes with worn-in teeth will be worn out again after a short time – that is our routine, not a manufacturer requirement. Original spare parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are sourced to order and cannot be resold after being installed or test-fitted on a machine. Why brass and not steel?
That is how the part is made. Our documentation does not give a reason – in drive engineering, brass is common as the quieter-running partner in a gear pair.
Is the mating gear included?
No, one gear is supplied.
Can I replace the gear myself?
It sits in the drive close to live parts. We recommend installation by a specialist and, in any case, disconnecting the unit from the mains.
