The ring that keeps the ram centred
The guide ring sits in the portafilter holder and guides the tamper ram along its path. It makes sure the ram enters the basket at the same point on every cycle – 61 millimetres in diameter, 2.5 millimetres thick, and that is exactly what decides whether the puck comes out level or stays higher on one side.
The ring is a wear part in a spot that takes hundreds of loads every day. It wears in, picks up scoring, and the play that develops goes straight into the tamp. This version belongs to the M3, M4, M5 and M6 models.
When it is due
It is due when the puck is higher on one side, when the ram has noticeable play in the ring, when the ring shows scoring, notches or cracks, or when it has become deformed. Replacing it often brings back a more even tamp without changing anything else.

Important for installation
The ring sits in the moving holder of the tamper. Disconnect the unit from the mains before working on it. After the replacement, do a test run with an empty portafilter before working with coffee again. We deliberately do not give step-by-step instructions here.
Who it is for
For high-volume bars where the tamp has gradually become uneven – and for service businesses that keep the ring in stock as a predictable wear part.
What goes with it
For the Q series we carry the guide ring for Q1 Gen 5 and Q2. On the same holder you will find the lower clamping ring for M3 to M6 and the portafilter rest slide. The whole category is under Macap and PuqPress spare parts.
From our workshop in Bern and Zurich
When someone shows us an uneven tamp, we look at this ring first and only then at the settings. In nine out of ten cases it is down to the worn ring and not the recipe – that is our routine, not a manufacturer specification. We check with whatever is in the grinder at the time, usually Nutty Delight, otherwise Cozy Chocolate or Very Nutty. The full range is under Coffee beans.
No returns
Original spare parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are sourced to order and cannot be resold once they have been installed or test-fitted on a machine. So before ordering, check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or drop us a line and we will clarify the fit together. Your rights in the case of defective goods remain unaffected.
Frequently asked questions
How does it differ from the ring for Q1 and Q2?
Both are specified as 61 × 2.5 mm, but the part numbers are different and our documentation assigns them to different product series. So order by machine, not by size.
How often does the ring need replacing?
Our documentation does not specify an interval. In practice, throughput decides.
Does it fit any 58 mm portafilter?
The ring belongs to the unit, not the portafilter. What matters is the tamper model – if in doubt, write and tell us which one you have.
Are fixings included?
The ring is supplied on its own.
Can I pick up the part in your shop?
Yes. We are in Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and in Zurich at Hagenholzstrasse 50b. Drop us a line telling us which part you need and we will have it ready.
