The portafilter sits firmly again when the tamper comes down
During automatic tamping, the ram presses into the portafilter with considerable force. So that nothing shifts, the portafilter is held between two clamping rings – the lower one receives it and keeps it centred until the ram is back up. If this guidance is off, the device tamps at an angle.
The clamping ring is a part that is in use on every shift. The coating wears bare, the edge takes knocks from inserting the portafilter, and at some point the portafilter no longer sits snugly. This version is matt chrome-plated and belongs to the M3, M4, M5 and M6 models.
When it's due
It's due when the portafilter has play in the ring or can be twisted, when the tamp becomes lopsided, when the edge shows knocks or chips, or when the coating is peeling off.

Important for installation
The clamping ring is part of the holder, where considerable forces act during tamping. Before any work, the device is disconnected from the mains. After the replacement, the centring must be checked – a ring fitted slightly off-centre leads to exactly the uneven tamp you wanted to fix. We deliberately do not provide step-by-step instructions here.
Who it's for
For bars running a PuqPress in continuous operation and for service companies getting an unevenly tamping machine back on track.
What goes with it
We carry the device itself as the Puqpress Mini. Further parts are listed in the category Spare parts Macap and PuqPress and under Puqpress. You'll find everything else on grinders and tamping under Original spare parts.
From our workshop in Bern and Zurich
After the replacement, we first check with an empty portafilter whether it can be inserted without tilting, and only then with coffee. If you test straight away with a puck, you only see the misalignment in the extraction – this is our routine, not a manufacturer specification. For readjusting, we like to use Nutty Delight, otherwise Cozy Chocolate or Very Nutty. The full selection is under Coffee beans.
No returns
Original spare parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are sourced specifically for each order and cannot be resold once they have been installed or test-fitted on a device. So before ordering, check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or drop us a quick message and we'll clarify the fit together. Your rights in the case of defective goods remain unaffected.
Frequently asked questions
Do I also need the upper clamping ring?
Not necessarily. If both are worn, it's worth replacing them as a pair – if only the lower one is damaged, this part is enough.
Does the ring fit my portafilter diameter?
Our documentation lists it for the M3 to M6 models without stating a diameter. Let us know which device and which portafilter you use, and we'll check the fit.
What does matt chrome-plated mean?
It describes the surface, not the base material. Our documentation gives no information on the base material.
Is mounting hardware included?
The clamping ring is supplied. Whether additional screws on your device need replacing will become clear on removal.
Can I pick up the part at your shop?
Yes. We're in Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and in Zurich at Hagenholzstrasse 50b. Drop us a quick message saying which part you need, and we'll have it ready.
