Two tenths of a millimetre. That is all the thickness this part has, and yet it helps decide whether the grinder works cleanly or whether ground coffee keeps trickling out after grinding. A flap is doing its job when you don't notice it – it gives way when ground coffee comes through and settles back in place when nothing more comes.
That is exactly why it is a wear part. It moves with every dose, it sits in coffee oil, and it is thin enough to bend or tear over time. Then it no longer closes completely, and you can see that from the coffee trickling onto the portafilter rest.
When ground coffee visibly trickles out after grinding, when the flap no longer lies flat, when it is torn, kinked or bent, or when a hard layer of old coffee oil has built up on it that can no longer be brushed off. Because the part is inexpensive, replacing it is almost always worthwhile as soon as you are in doubt.

For anyone who uses a Jay every day and has no desire for a counter constantly covered in crumbs – and for service businesses that replace the inexpensive wear parts in the coffee path as part of a grinder service.
In the same coffee path sits the Jay coffee chute. On top of the grinder sit the complete bean hopper and its lid. To clean the grinding mechanism, we use Puly Grind Verde. More under Coffee grinder accessories and spare parts and Service parts.
With wear parts this inexpensive, we always keep one in reserve in the toolbox. A torn flap gets noticed on a Saturday morning, and on a Saturday morning nobody wants to wait for a delivery. That is our experience from Bern and Zurich, not a manufacturer specification. To dial in after the service, we use Nutty Delight, Cozy Chocolate or Very Nutty. All roasts under Coffee beans.
Service parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are sourced on a per-order basis and cannot be resold after installation or a test fitting on the machine. So before ordering, check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or send us a quick message and we'll clarify the fit together. Your rights in the case of defective goods remain unaffected.
It gives way when ground coffee comes through and then settles back in place. That way, nothing keeps trickling out after grinding.
Our documentation lists it for the Jay. For other grinders, send us the serial number and we'll check it in advance.
That depends on throughput. We replace it as soon as it no longer lies flat or is torn – not at a fixed interval.
Dry, with a soft brush. Water in the coffee path binds the fines and makes things worse.
Yes, in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) you can see it in person.
