Profitec TWIST SD54 – Single Dose Espresso Grinder with 54 mm Steel Burrs
A quick press on the bellows, a soft trickle into the cup, and all of the grounds are right in front of you.
The way there is short. You weigh the beans in the Dosing Cup, pour them into the Coffee Bellow, close the lid and put the cup back on the integrated Leveler, where a magnet holds it in place and keeps it from tipping over. After grinding, a few pumps on the bellows are enough to release the particles left in the grinding chamber. Then place the portafilter on the Dosing Cup, flip it over, distribute with the Leveler, tamp, pull the shot.
What single dosing really means
Single dosing is a trade-off, and we're happy to describe it openly. You weigh each dose individually, there's no supply waiting in a hopper, and there's one extra step before the cup. In return, you switch beans with nothing left behind: what you put in comes out, and the next coffee tastes of itself and not of the one before.
That's exactly what the whole setup of bellows, Dosing Cup and Leveler is about. The bellows push air through the grinding chamber and bring out what would otherwise stay behind. The magnet keeps the cup steady while you need both hands for the portafilter. And the Leveler takes care of distribution before you even reach for the tamper.
Why 54 mm steel burrs make the difference
Coffee carries more than 800 aromatic compounds, and which of them reach your cup is decided to a large extent during grinding. Particle size and uniformity determine how quickly and how completely the water works its way through the puck. The more similar the particles, the more evenly the compounds dissolve that give you dense, round, sweet cups – caramel, chocolate, nuts, a long finish that doesn't break off.
The TWIST SD54 works with 54 mm steel burrs in an aluminium grinding unit and turns at 1400 revolutions per minute. A grinder's speed is not a side issue: higher speeds tend to bring more body to the cup, lower ones are gentler on the more delicate compounds. Both are valid, both taste different.
Grinders are like car engines. There is no best one, only ones that suit what you want to drink. Our opinion is one of many, and it doesn't replace your own palate.
The grind size can be adjusted steplessly, with no increments in between. That's pleasant when fine-tuning, because you can work in tiny steps until the ratio is right. We always describe extraction by weight ratio, not by time alone: 1:2 is a good starting point, meaning around 36 grams of espresso from 18 grams of dry coffee. From there, you shift in the direction that tastes good to you.
And one more thing that applies to every grinder: no shot is truly repeatable. The bean ages, the humidity changes, and you yourself aren't the same person today as yesterday. There is no right and no wrong, only the question of whether you like it. Espresso is complex, but it isn't rocket science.

Who it's made for
For everyone who likes to switch between beans and wants every switch to be clean. For everyone who pulls two shots in the morning and doesn't want to leave a supply sitting in a hopper. For everyone with limited counter space who still doesn't want to do without 54 mm steel burrs.
And just as much for everyone who's only starting to explore grind size and weight ratio. Every budget is a starting point: an affordable grinder makes good coffee, a more expensive one makes different coffee. Anyone who wants this one usually already knows why – and that's reason enough. Nobody needs it. You either want it or you don't.
If you'd like to compare, you'll find more single dose espresso grinders side by side, with the matching espresso machines and portafilter machines right next to them.
What goes well with it
A grinder that wants to be dosed by weight works best with a scale that responds quickly enough. For everyone who wants coffee scales that are affordable and precise: the compact and reliable models from the Normcore Collection. Anyone who wants app connectivity, a flow rate display and Bluetooth: the Acaia coffee scales.
The same goes for tamping, in both directions. For everyone who wants a tamper that is affordable and precise: the pressure-regulating Normcore Spring-Loaded Tamper. Anyone who wants more in feel and craftsmanship: the Weber Workshops tampers and the Moonraker as a WDT tool. Puck screens and tamping stations are also available at both price levels – Normcore on one side, Weber Workshops on the other.
The Dosing Cup comes with the grinder. Still, having a second one alongside is handy if you run two coffees in parallel.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see the Profitec TWIST SD54 live before buying?
That depends on whether the Profitec TWIST SD54 is on display right now. Our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) show a wide selection, but not our entire range – it is too large for that, and the display changes. Drop us a quick line at [email protected] before your visit, and we will check whether the Profitec TWIST SD54 is currently there.
What is the difference between the TWIST SD54 and the TWIST A54?
Both grinders use 54 mm steel burrs, turn at 1400 rpm and have a 235 W motor. The SD54 is the single dose version with Coffee Bellow, Dosing Cup and Leveler, without a bean hopper. The A54 has a bean hopper holding 250 g, three programmable dose settings and a height-adjustable portafilter rest for hands-free grinding.
What colours does the TWIST SD54 come in?
Profitec offers the TWIST SD54 in three finishes: Black, Yellow and Polished stainless steel. Technically the three are identical; they differ only in the housing.
How much space does it need on the counter?
The grinder measures 120 mm in width, 225 mm in depth and 345 mm in height and weighs 7 kg including Coffee Bellow, Dosing Cup and Leveler. So in width it needs hardly more than a hand span.
How fast is delivery and where to?
We deliver within 2 to 4 working days throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. Financing is available. We're happy to answer questions by email at [email protected] or by phone during business hours.
Is Coffee Coaching Club a Profitec partner?
Yes, we are an authorised Profitec partner and carry the brand in Switzerland with machines, grinders and accessories.
From our coffee roastery
As a roastery, we like this grinder best with something that brings body. Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight are what ends up in our cups most often: dense, aromatic, freshly roasted and round. If you're looking for maximum body without any acidity, you'll find it in Very Nutty.
And for everyone who's curious and would like to try something fruity for once: Wild Peach shows how lively a light roast can become through 54 mm steel burrs. What you perceive as aroma in the glass, by the way, arises for the most part retronasally, when you swallow and the volatile compounds rise through the throat to the olfactory mucosa. That's also why anticipation is already part of the enjoyment: dopamine is released while you're looking forward to it, not only with the first sip.
That's our recommendation, one of many. Any bean you enjoy will work in this grinder.
