Brita AquaAroma Crema filter for Arkel
Your espresso tastes flat, the crema collapses – and you've already tried everything?
Then the problem probably isn't with your grinder or tamping, but with the water. Over 98% of your espresso consists of water – and that's precisely where the Brita AquaAroma Crema filter cartridge comes in. Specially developed for portafilter machines with an integrated water tank, it filters out unwanted substances directly during brewing and transforms your tap water into the perfect base for extraction.
Why Brita Professional – and why at the Coffee Coaching Club?
Brita's experience in water filtration dates back to 1966. The AquaAroma Crema is not a consumer cartridge from the supermarket, but a professional product tested for food safety by independent institutes and specifically developed for the requirements of espresso machines.
What the AquaAroma Crema can technically achieve
The cartridge uses selective decarbonization. This means that carbonate hardness (calcium and magnesium carbonate) is specifically reduced, while taste-relevant minerals remain in the water. Additionally, chlorine residues as well as coarse and fine particles are filtered out.
The integrated aroma ring allows for a three-stage bypass setting (stages A, B, C) to adjust the filtration level to your local water hardness. A test strip for determining water hardness is included.
The unique feature: Filtration takes place immediately during brewing. The water is drawn directly through the cartridge by your machine's pump – no pre-filtering, no waiting, no stagnant water.

☕ CCC tip from Chemicker – Water chemistry & aroma development
Hard water is one of the most common reasons for flat, one-dimensional espressos. A high carbonate content buffers the natural fruit acids in coffee; they are neutralized by excess bicarbonate.
AquaAroma Crema removes precisely these impurities without making the water too soft. Even excessively soft water (below 4 °dH) extracts flavors overly aggressively and emphasizes unpleasant astringent notes.
Our tip for Zurich: Start with level B – Zurich tap water typically has a hardness of 14–19 °fH (soft to medium-hard), and level B offers the best balance between limescale protection and taste profile.
