Bottomless portafilter gives the most honest view of the puck – you see channeling, spraying, and dripping directly on the filter. Double spout is more subtle: uneven streams between left and right are a first indicator. Both have their place – the choice is a matter of preference.
Can I also pull just one cup with the double spout?
Yes. Place a large cup or glass underneath, both streams will flow into it. For a small espresso cup, this might be a bit tight – a single spout is better suited for that.
When should I replace the spout?
If the thread is worn, the spout no longer seals properly, or visible corrosion occurs. With normal care, a spout lasts for many years.
