What makes the Acaia Orion Nano special

The Orion Nano doses your whole beans by weight before they go into the grinder. That sounds unremarkable, but it's the point where a lot of variation disappears: beans are never equally dense, so a volumetric measure is easily misleading. Weight, on the other hand, doesn't lie. Accurate to around 0.25 grams – roughly one to three beans – the Nano sets out your single dose at a speed of two grams per second. A patented auger moves the beans gently without damaging them.

With the dial you choose saved target weights, and an automatic mode doses cup after cup continuously. The smart system learns as it goes: it compares target and actual weight and fine-tunes itself over time. In this way the Nano follows an idea that's close to our hearts anyway – extraction starts with the ratio, and an espresso at a ratio of around 1:2 depends on the input dose being right. No shot is the same as yesterday's, because the bean, the humidity and you yourself change every day; a consistent dose at least takes one variable out of the game.

Its clever trick is Orion's Belt: with this connection you link several Orion Nanos into a small blending station. You set ratios, combine beans and build your own blends – a playground for experimenting that makes just as much sense at a cupping as behind the coffee bar. The Nano takes over the award-winning technology of the larger Orion but shrinks it to a footprint that needs hardly any space.

Do you need something like this? To be honest: nobody does. A scale and a steady hand will do the job too. The Nano is for those who love the ritual – the turning, the even trickle, the freedom to build blends. You either want it or you don't, and both are perfectly fine. That depends on whether the Orion Nano is on display right now. How do the Orion Nano and Orion Mini differ in size and weight?

The Orion Nano weighs around 1370 grams and measures 163 × 174 × 314 millimetres – considerably more compact than the Orion Mini at around 2850 grams and 202 × 303 × 352 millimetres.
