Acaia Pearl S – smart brewing scale with flow rate and Brewguide
The kettle has just gone quiet, the kitchen smells of freshly ground coffee, and on the Pearl S display the first step appears silently. Pouring begins – and a fine bar moves along with you, showing in real time how quickly the water flows into the coffee bed. No rushing, no guessing. Just you, the water, and a scale that thinks along with every tenth of a second.
It's this moment just before the first sip where everything is decided – and the Pearl S is built to make it calm and easy to follow.
What makes the Acaia Pearl S special
The Pearl S is a scale that thinks along without getting in the way. It measures to within 0.1 grams and reacts quickly enough that you follow the build of your shot or your filter coffee at the pace it actually happens. For us, good coffee starts with the ratio: we describe extraction by weight, an espresso at roughly a 1:2 ratio – so around 18 grams of coffee becoming about 36 grams in the cup. Seconds are a guide here, weight is the truth.
The centerpiece is the real-time flow rate display. It shows you in grams per second how quickly the water moves through the coffee bed. That's more than a gimmick: how quickly you pour moves the coffee bed and affects how evenly the water dissolves the soluble compounds – and with that, whether your cup turns out round and sweet or edgy. There's no need to study the physics behind it to use it; the Pearl S simply makes it visible.
Through Brewguide mode, you load recipes onto the scale via the app. Step by step, the display then guides you through bloom, pours, and wait times – with no phone in hand. If you like, weight and time can also be announced as sound or voice; if you want quiet, you can mute everything. Acaia lists eight brewing modes, from simple weighing to espresso and pour-over to a countdown with over 30 melodies. In practice, that means: the scale adapts to your way, not the other way around.
And that's exactly our stance: there's no espresso police, no right and no wrong. No shot is like yesterday's, because the bean, the humidity, and you yourself change every day. That's not a limitation – that's the beauty of it. The Pearl S gives you data, not a verdict. What you make of it is entirely up to you.
A scale in this league is also a decision of feeling. A simple scale weighs just as reliably for most people – the Acaia says something different: through the display, the app, the way it sits on the counter. Nobody needs the one or the other. Wanting it – or not – is entirely up to you. Both are entirely legitimate, and that's just our opinion, one of many.

Who the Pearl S is made for
The Pearl S is for anyone who likes to understand their coffee while making it – whether at the portafilter or over the filter. It speaks to people who love pour-over and want to not just feel the pour but see it, as well as those who build their espresso down to the gram. Whether you're brewing your first mindful filter coffee or have been refining your recipes for years: the scale accompanies every path, with no prerequisites. Every pace is welcome here.
What goes with it
A scale reveals its value alongside the rest of your setup. Everything starts with the grind – in our coffee grinders you'll find everything from compact to large that grinds evenly. For the extraction itself, it's worth a look at our espresso machines, and if you use the Pearl S for pour-over, the hand filters and carafes from our Hario Collection will serve you well.
For the scales themselves: if you want to weigh compactly, precisely, and affordably, you'll find in the Normcore Collection reliable companions. If you're after app connectivity, flow rate, and the full Brewguide experience, the Acaia Collection is the right choice. Not sure what fits your setup? Our advisory tool can help.
Frequently asked questions about the Acaia Pearl S
How does the Pearl S differ from the Lunar and the Pearl 2021?
The Lunar is compact and fits under almost any espresso machine – ideal for espresso. The Pearl 2021 is the larger, classic brewing scale with flow rate display. The Pearl S goes a step further: interactive Brewguide mode, sound and voice announcements, and a capacity of 3000 g. Which one fits you depends on whether you're more into espresso, filter, or both – you'll find all three in our Acaia Collection.
Is the Pearl S suitable for both espresso and pour-over?
Yes. The Pearl S has its own modes for both – from portafilter mode for the portafilter to pour-over with automatic timer start and flow rate. A portafilter fits on the weighing surface, and for longer filter brews, the included heat-resistant mat protects the surface.
Do I need the app to use the Pearl S?
No. Weighing, the timer, and espresso and pour-over modes all work without a phone. The free Acaia Brewguide app (iOS and Android) is only needed if you want to load or share recipes on the scale. Once transferred, the Brewguide guides you straight through the brew on the display.
Can I see the Acaia Pearl S before buying?
Of course. As the importer of Acaia, we'll show you the Pearl S live in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Not every model is on site at all times; send us a quick message and we'll have it ready for you. Most of our customers buy the scale simply online.
How quickly can the Pearl S be delivered?
We deliver within 2 to 4 business days throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. Click & Collect is also available in Bern and Zürich.
Roastery Tip
When we set up the Pearl S and pull a shot, we like to reach for beans with body and sweetness – our Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight show beautifully how consistent a build becomes with precise weight. If you like it full and round without any acidity, stick with Very Nutty. And on curious days, when we're looking for something fruity in the cup, Wild Peach goes into the grinder. That's our recommendation – one of many, and whichever bean tastes right to you is the right one.
