Mahlkönig EK43 S – 98 mm All-Round Grinder for Espresso and Filter
Espresso in the morning, filter in the afternoon, from the same grinder: the Mahlkönig EK43 S brings the 98 mm burr set of the EK43 into a more compact housing.
It grinds on 98 mm burrs made of hardened cast steel, from Turkish-fine to filter. We are a partner of Mahlkönig and deliver the EK43 S throughout Switzerland, with showrooms in Bern and Zurich.
Features of the Mahlkönig EK43 S
EK43 performance in a smaller housing
The EK43 S takes over the performance and grind results of the EK43 in a space-saving body – suitable for smaller bars too.
Even particle distribution
According to Mahlkönig, the particle distribution delivers high extraction rates. To us, burr sets are like engines: subjective, with no objectively best one – the 98 mm burr set of the EK is one of the best-known designs.
98 mm burrs made of cast steel
Hardened cast steel, glass-bead blasted, 64–66 HRC, service life approx. 6000 kg at a medium setting. The same burrs run in the EK43 and EK43 S.
Robust with high grinding capacity
Average grinding capacity 19–21 g/s, Turkish-fine 10–12 g/s.
Filter, espresso, Turkish-fine
One burr set for several brewing methods. For Turkish-fine, there is the EK43 T configuration with its own burrs and a pre-breaker for reduced grinding speed.
Other materials too
With dedicated burrs and a pre-breaker, the EK43 S also grinds spices, grain, poppy seeds and linseed (special configurations EP43, EG43, EM43, EL43).
Simple, precise grind adjustment
The grind size is set using the large dial with a scale.
The details in everyday use
Bag holder
A bag holder sits at the spout, so you can grind straight into the coffee bag.
For espresso, we start at a brew ratio of 1:2 by weight and adjust to taste, not to time. No two shots are alike – beans, humidity and how you feel on the day all change. Our opinion is one of many.

Who the EK43 S is made for
For bars, roasteries and households that grind filter and espresso with one grinder and have less counter space for it than the EK43 needs. Whether the EK43 S, a smaller grinder or a hand grinder suits you depends on your everyday routine – every coffee path is valid.
If you want to compare, you will find more models among our coffee grinders, in the consultation tool or in the comparison workshop in Zurich, where grinders and machines are set up side by side for a reserved hour. An option, not a requirement. A free consultation is available separately. Financing available.
What goes with it
For anyone who wants scales that are affordable and precise: Normcore. If you want an app, flow-rate display and Bluetooth: Acaia. For filter: the Hario V60 from our Hario selection, and if you want more: the BIRD from Weber Workshops. For espresso, you will find the right machine among our espresso machines.
Frequently asked questions about the Mahlkönig EK43 S
What is the difference between the EK43 S and the EK43?
The EK43 S brings the performance and grind results of the EK43 into a smaller, space-saving housing. Both work with 98 mm burrs made of cast steel. You will find both models in our Mahlkönig collection.
Is the EK43 S suitable for filter and espresso?
Yes. Mahlkönig lists filter, espresso and Turkish-fine as applications. For Turkish-fine, there is the special configuration EK43 T with its own burrs and a pre-breaker.
How big is the bean hopper of the EK43 S?
As standard, the bean hopper holds approx. 250 g. Mahlkönig also offers optional hoppers of approx. 1200 g and approx. 1800 g.
How long do the burrs last?
Mahlkönig states a service life of approx. 6000 kg for the 98 mm burrs at a medium setting.
Can I see the EK43 S before buying?
That depends on whether the EK43 S is currently on display. In our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b), we show a wide selection, but not our entire range. Write to us at [email protected] before your visit, and we will check whether the EK43 S is currently there. In the comparison workshop in Zurich, you can test grinders side by side.
Which machine or brewer goes with the EK43 S?
For espresso, a machine from our espresso machines; for filter, a pour-over dripper from our Hario selection. Our consultation tool helps you choose.
Tip from the roastery: For a dense, full-bodied espresso, we roast Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight – chocolate, nuts, caramel, and round in filter too. If you want maximum body without acidity, reach for Very Nutty. For the curious, Wild Peach shows a fruity side in filter. Other beans work just as well. That is our recommendation, one of many.
