Mazzer Philos – 64 mm single dose grinder for espresso and filter
Weigh the beans, pour them in, grind: the Mazzer Philos grinds every dose individually with vertical 64 mm flat burrs, from espresso to batch brew. Mazzer describes retention as negligible when used correctly.
The Philos comes from Mazzer in Scorzè near Venice, where coffee grinders and burrs have been made since 1948. Mazzer describes it as a single dose grinder for small spaces, made of stainless steel, brass and anodized aluminum. As a partner of Mazzer, we carry it in black and silver.
Features of the Mazzer Philos
Zero retention
With vertically arranged burrs, the Philos is designed so that no coffee stays behind in the grinding chamber and nothing gets mixed. You can switch origin or brew method without losing coffee or time. The Dose Finisher clears the last remnants from the outlet and is stored behind the front plate.
Easy to use and to clean
For cleaning or changing the burrs, the grinding chamber is accessible from the front without tools, and your grind setting is kept. The adjustment ring has a clearly visible scale and is not easily moved by accident. Without the stainless steel hopper, the Philos sits lower, and filling it stays safe.
Quality in a small footprint
The design draws on the Mazzer ZM and takes up little space on the counter. An asynchronous motor, precisely machined parts and easily recyclable materials make this 12.5 kg grinder durable. Tight tolerances and integrated vibration damping keep it steady even during longer use. Electronic and mechanical safety features protect you even with the hopper removed, and all parts in contact with coffee are certified food-safe.
Stepped or stepless
In stepped mode, each click equals 6 microns, and one turn of the ring covers everything from espresso to batch brew, making recipes repeatable. With a simple move, you switch to stepless if you want infinite settings.
Even grinding
Vertical flat burrs, a pre-breaker and a geometrically optimized grinding channel stop the beans from popcorning and feed them evenly. The long auger helps prevent clogging, regrinding and uneven particles. Every Philos is checked for parallel burrs before delivery.
Two burr sets for every brew method
You choose between two original 64 mm flat burr sets from Mazzer, both suited to filter and espresso. They are made of food-safe stainless steel, resistant to oxidation and moisture (including with RDT) and seasoned at the factory. According to Mazzer, I200D brings plenty of clarity, a balanced, pleasant acidity and fruity notes with medium body, ideal for light to medium roasts. I189D is the further development of the Mazzer Mini burrs: full body, a velvety mouthfeel, chocolate and dried fruit, easy to dial in and strong with medium to dark roasts and classic Italian espresso.
The details in everyday use
Using it without the hopper
Without the stainless steel hopper, up to 24 g of beans fit into the feed, and the slide gate still closes. The hopper also works as a funnel on the dosing cup when you weigh your dose.
Behind the front plate
The stainless steel front plate is held by strong magnets. Behind it are the handle for removing the burr carrier, the magnetic holder for the Dose Finisher and the auger. The carrier is fastened with long wing nuts that you loosen by hand.
How to get the lowest retention
Grind the dose into the cup, pull and release the knocker on the outlet several times, remove the cup. With the motor running, insert the Dose Finisher as far as it goes and turn it back and forth.
Calibration
From the factory, position 0 leaves a little space between the burrs. You need to recalibrate after changing the burrs or if you have removed them for cleaning. A quick clean without removing the burrs needs no calibration.
First use
The burrs are ready to use straight away. Mazzer recommends not using the first 50 g of grounds. A little coffee between the burrs of a new Philos is normal: every grinder is checked with beans during assembly.
Less static
The entire bean path is moisture-resistant, including the bearings, so RDT is possible. Mazzer has optimized the Philos for low static charge and recommends the included dosing cup for this.

Who the Philos is made for
For anyone who wants to grind dose by dose and switch between espresso, filter and batch brew without purging. Which burrs suit you better depends on what you drink: I189D for body and sweetness, I200D for clarity. Burrs are like engines, there is no objectively best one. Our opinion is one of many.
For espresso, we grind fine, start at 14.5 grams and work our way up from there, usually to 17 grams, at a ratio below 1:2. If you prefer grinding from a filled bean hopper, you will find the Mini g in our Mazzer collection. Other single dose grinders: for anyone who wants affordable, precise grinding, the Varia VS3 from our Varia collection; if you want more, the Weber Workshops EG-1 or a grinder from Option-O.
Good companions: espresso machines with a 58 mm portafilter, for example from La Marzocco or Rocket Espresso. For scales, Normcore is compact and precise, Acaia comes with an app and flow rate display. For puck prep, WDT tools from Normcore or the Moonraker from Weber Workshops.
Our advice tool and a free consultation appointment help you narrow things down. If you want to compare grinders side by side, you can book the espresso machine and grinder comparison in Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b), where Mazzer is part of the selection, or in Bern (Gerberngasse 44). This is an option, not a requirement. Not every model is set up at all times, so send your preferred model in advance to [email protected].
You can buy the Mazzer Philos in Switzerland directly online. Delivery throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein in 2–4 business days, Click & Collect in Bern and Zurich.
Frequently asked questions
Which burrs suit me, I200D or I189D?
Both are 64 mm flat burrs from Mazzer and are intended for all brew methods. According to Mazzer, I200D emphasizes clarity and a pleasant acidity with medium body, suited to light to medium roasts. I189D brings full body and a velvety mouthfeel, suited to medium to dark roasts and classic espresso.
Is the Philos stepped or stepless?
Both. From the factory it is stepped, with each click equal to 6 microns. With a simple move, you switch to stepless.
Do I lose my grind setting when cleaning?
No. The grind size is set on the rear, moving burr. You take off the magnetic front plate, loosen the wing nuts by hand and pull out the front carrier. You only need to recalibrate if you remove or change the burrs.
Does the dosing cup fit my portafilter?
The included cup holds 60 g and is made for 58 mm portafilters. For 53 mm portafilters, Mazzer offers a matching cup as an accessory.
Can I use RDT?
Yes. The burrs are made of stainless steel, and according to Mazzer the entire bean path is moisture-resistant, including the bearings.
Can I see the Philos before buying?
Yes, in Bern or Zurich Oerlikon, if it is currently on display. Write to us in advance at [email protected]. For a direct comparison with other grinders, there is the bookable comparison workshop.
Tip from the roastery: For espresso and milk drinks, our team roasts Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight: full-bodied, sweet, with notes of chocolate and nut. If you are looking for maximum body without acidity, reach for Very Nutty. And if you want to discover a fruity side with the I200D burrs, you will find it in Wild Peach. This is our recommendation, one of many.
