La Marzocco Linea Mini R – The legend reinterpreted: Dual boiler power with brew-by-weight and shot timer (Switzerland)

  • - Integrated shot timer at eye level – finally on the Linea Mini R
  • - Brew-by-Weight compatibility: Programming by weight instead of volume
  • - Convertible 3-in-1 portafilter: Single-spout, double-spout, bottomless in one

  • - Offline Mode (Bluetooth) – also works without Wi-Fi
  • - UL & NSF certified – suitable for commercial use (café, coffee cart)

✗ Less suitable for

  • - Small kitchens under 60 cm wide (then the Linea Micra is the better choice)

  • - Users who want to work exclusively manually without electronics

Ideal for

Ambitious home baristas who want the full café experience at home – with the same machine that runs in thousands of professional cafés worldwide. Perfect for households that regularly entertain guests, or for small coffee carts and pop-ups.

In one sentence

The Linea Mini R is the compact version of the Linea Classic S – with 40 years of La Marzocco heritage, 3-liter steam power, integrated shot timer and Brew-by-Weight technology that turns any home into a professional café.

Imagine this: It's Saturday morning, 7:30 a.m. The Linea Mini R is there – gleaming stainless steel, imposing, ready. You place your hand on the portafilter, feel the cool metal, hear the soft hum of the rotary pump. This isn't a machine you "use." This is a machine you work with. Like a barista in a café. Because it's the same machine.

The shot timer starts as soon as you push the paddle. The crema builds up – tiger-striped, hazelnut brown, dense. Until you reach 36 grams of output. You push the paddle back. Pure enjoyment! And what if guests arrive? No problem. The 3-liter steam boiler can make cappuccinos one after the other – without any faltering or loss of temperature.

This isn't just an espresso machine. It's an investment in your daily ritual. A tool that challenges you, that helps you grow, that shows you: espresso is a craft. And with the right machine, you'll taste the difference – shot after shot, year after year.

Why the La Marzocco Linea Mini R will impress you

As a coffee roastery with chemists on our team, we know that temperature stability is non-negotiable . If the brewing temperature fluctuates during extraction, the chemistry changes dramatically. At 92°C, you extract the sweet, caramel-like compounds from the Maillard reaction. At 94°C, the bitter components begin to dominate. The Linea Mini R solves this problem with a separate dual-boiler system and a commercial-grade brew group.

The coffee boiler (0.5 liters) is thermally insulated and integrated directly into the brew group – just like in the Linea Classic S, the machine that has been used in cafés worldwide since the 1990s. The steam boiler (3.0 liters) is one of the largest in any home machine – you can make cappuccinos one after the other without any loss of steam power. This isn't "home level." This is commercial level. That's why the Mini R is also UL and NSF certified for professional use.

But here's the truth: Yes, the technology is commercial-grade. But the real reason you'll love the Mini R? The shot timer . La Marzocco fans have been asking for this feature for over 10 years. Now it's here—at eye level, flush with the front, always visible. It doesn't tell you how long you "should" extract. It shows you what happened during your weight-based extraction. That's the difference between a timer and a tool. You decide by weight (36g output), the timer gives you feedback. That's learning. That's control. That's craftsmanship.

Your workflow with the Linea Mini R

Step 1: Preparation
The machine is already heated up (via app timer or manually). Dual boiler at operating temperature: coffee 93°C, steam 120°C. You weigh out 18g of beans – precisely to 0.1g with the Acaia Lunar.

Step 2: Grinding with a high-end grinder
You grind with one of the top-of-the-line mills: Varia VS4 (zero retention), Varia VS6 (even greater clarity), Option-O Lagom P80 (80mm flat burrs, barista-champion level), or the Weber Workshops EG-1 (83mm conical burrs, legendary status). These mills are in a different league than standard home grinders – they produce particle consistency at a commercial level. The flour falls evenly into the dosing cup.

Step 3: Portioning & Tamping
Use a fine tool (e.g. , Normcore WDT ) to evenly distribute the coffee grounds. Tamp with 15 kg of pressure – or with a calibrated tamper like the Normcore 58 mm tamper . The puck bed is level, the surface smooth as glass.

Step 4: Insert portafilter & pre-infusion
The 58mm convertible portafilter clicks firmly into place in the brew group. You lift the paddle – pre-infusion begins automatically (programmable via app: 5-8 seconds at low pressure). The coffee grounds are gently saturated, preventing channeling. Then the pressure rises to 9 bar.

Step 5: Extraction by weight
If you're using brew-by-weight: The Acaia X La Marzocco scale automatically stops at 36g output. If you're working manually: You watch the scale, push the paddle up at 36g. The shot timer runs simultaneously – that's your feedback. The first drops fall dark and viscous. The crema builds – hazelnut brown, tiger-striped, dense. At 36g, you push the paddle back. The ratio: 1:2 (18g in, 36g out). The timer shows you what happened – it's learning by doing.

Step 6: Steam for milk drinks
Paddle to the side, open the steam lever. The 3-liter steam boiler delivers instant power – no waiting, no pressure loss. The cool-touch steam wand is insulated (PEEK polymer tip), so you won't burn your fingers. The milk swirls, creating microfoam – silky texture, no large bubbles. When the milk reaches 60°C (you'll feel it on the side of the pitcher), lift out the wand. Perfect for latte art. The steam power is adjustable via the app (levels 1-3) – adapt it to your type of milk (whole milk needs more power than oat milk).

Step 7: Enjoy & Analyze
Flat white, cappuccino, or straight as an espresso. The first sip: balance. Chocolate, caramel, a subtle nutty note on the finish. No bitterness, no acidity. Just what the bean contains – extracted at precisely the right temperature. This is no accident. This is craftsmanship.

Who is the La Marzocco Linea Mini R right for?

You don't need the Mini R. But if you want the full café experience at home, if you regularly entertain guests, if you want to experiment with brew-by-weight – then it's perfect for you.

Ideal for :

  • Ambitious home baristas upgrading from a single boiler machine and finally want true temperature stability and steam power
  • Households that regularly entertain 5+ people (the 3L steam boiler can make cappuccinos without a break)
  • Coffee enthusiasts who want to work with brew-by-weight – program the machine to measure weight instead of volume.
  • Users who already own a high-end grinder (VS4, VS6, Lagom P80, EG-1) and are looking for a machine at the same level
  • Small Coffee Businesses: Coffee carts, pop-ups, small cafes
  • La Marzocco fans who love the design and feel of the Linea family – the paddle, the brew group, the feeling

Less suitable for :

  • Small kitchens with a working width of less than 60 cm (then the Linea Micra is the better choice – 11 cm narrower)
  • For budgets under CHF 4,500 (then we recommend the Flair 58 as a manual alternative or the Linea Micra )
  • Absolute beginners with no coffee experience (the Mini R is intuitive, but you should know the basics – grind size, dosage, tamping, milk frothing. If you buy from us, you receive an included introduction)

Or maybe you simply want it because it's available in red or chrome. Because you want to see that La Marzocco logo when you wake up in the morning. Because the paddle feels so good. Because you know: This is the same machine used in the best cafés worldwide. That's reason enough.

Perfectly combined with

The Linea Mini R deserves a grinder of equal quality. We recommend:

  • Varia VS4 : conical burrs, zero retention, perfect for single doses – the ideal balance of speed and quality. The VS4 is the perfect partner for the Mini R – both are optimized for consistency and workflow.
  • Varia VS6 : 63mm flat burrs, even more clarity and separation – especially with light roasts, the VS6 reveals the full complexity of fruity Ethiopians. The larger burrs extract more nuances, which the temperature stability of the Mini R perfectly showcases.
  • Option-O Lagom P80 : 80mm flat burrs, legendary particle consistency – the grinder used by barista champions. The P80 produces a particle distribution that is second to none. Combined with the Mini R, you have a setup that reaches world championship level.
  • Weber Workshops EG-1 : Mythical status in the coffee community – the endgame grinder. The EG-1 is the only grinder that plays in the same league as the Mini R: handcrafted, commercial quality, no compromises. Together they are the ultimate setup.

For brew-by-weight: The Acaia X La Marzocco Brew-by-Weight Scale (sold separately) integrates directly into the Linea Mini R via a special drip tray – you program the machine by weight (e.g., "Stop at 36g"), not by volume. This is precision on a new level. Alternatively: Acaia Lunar with the special drip tray – the scale sits almost flush with the drip tray, and the cup rests directly on the scale.

If you combine the Mini R with our roasts, we recommend:

  • Cozy Chocolate (Brazil Natural) at 93°C: 18g in, 36g out. The temperature stability of the Mini R extracts the chocolate notes without bitterness – the natural sweetness comes through fully.
  • Nutty Delight (Brazil/India) at 93°C: 18g in, 38g out. The hazelnut notes benefit from the consistent 9-bar extraction of the rotary pump. Perfect for flat whites – the milk harmonizes brilliantly with the nutty undertones.
  • Wild Peach (Ethiopian Natural) at 91-92°C: 17g in, 40g out (longer ratio for more clarity). Here you use the PID control of the Mini R: Set 91°C (via app), and the fruity, floral notes explode. Peach aromas that would be lost at 94°C.

For the ultimate setup: Normcore WDT Tool , a calibrated tamper (58mm) , a Rhinoware milk jug for latte art, and the Specht Design Wood Kit – handcrafted walnut or oak wood panels that will turn your Mini R into a work of art.

Our roastery recommendations for the Linea Mini R

Cozy Chocolate (Brazil Natural) – 93°C
18g in, 36g out. This roast is perfect for the Mini R: The temperature stability of the dual boiler extracts the chocolate notes cleanly and sweetly – no bitterness, no over-extraction. The natural processing brings out a caramel sweetness that is optimally developed at 93°C. This is the Maillard reaction at its finest – made possible by the commercial brew group of the Mini R.

Wild Peach (Ethiopian Natural) – 91°C
17g in, 40g out (a longer ratio for greater clarity). Here you utilize the Mini R's PID control: set it to 91°C (via the app), and the fruity, floral notes explode. Peach – aromas that would be lost at 94°C. With the Linea Mini R, you can extract such light roasts without bitter, astringent notes. That's the advantage of true temperature control at a commercial level.

Nutty Delight (Colombia Washed) – 93°C
18g in, 38g out. The hazelnut notes benefit from the consistent 9-bar extraction of the rotary pump. No pressure fluctuations, no risk of channeling. Just clean, nutty sweetness with a light caramel note on the finish. Perfect for flat whites – the 3-liter steam boiler creates creamy microfoam that harmonizes brilliantly with the nutty undertones.

All our roasts are chemically optimized for flavor , and the quality is consistent. The Linea Mini R extracts the maximum from these beans – because its commercial-grade temperature stability brings out every nuance inherent in the bean.

Frequently asked questions about the La Marzocco Linea Mini R

Do I need a fixed water connection or is the tank sufficient?

The 2.5-liter tank is sufficient for 10-15 shots, depending on the shot size. For most home users, that's more than enough. A plumbed-in water connection makes sense if you make 15+ shots daily, if you use the machine in a small café or coffee cart, or if you simply don't want to refill the tank. Installation requires opening the machine – we recommend having this done by a professional partner (we're happy to take care of it for you in our Coffee Coaching Club).

Can I also use the Mini R for a small coffee cart or pop-up?

Yes, absolutely! Many small coffee carts, pop-ups, and micro-cafés use the Mini R because it's compact (fits in a van) but has commercial power (3L steam boiler, rotary pump). The offline mode (Bluetooth) is perfect for locations without Wi-Fi.

Which grinder is compatible with the Mini R?

The Mini R is a commercial-grade machine in a compact form – it deserves a grinder of equal caliber. We recommend: Varia VS4 (perfect balance), Varia VS6 (greater clarity), Lagom P80 (barista-champion level), or Weber EG-1 (endgame). All four produce commercial-quality particle consistency – the Mini R will then show you what these grinders are truly capable of.

A final roastery tip : Don't use the Mini R's shot timer as a guideline, but rather as feedback. Extract by weight (36g output); the timer will show you what happened. If your shot was too fast, grind finer. If it was too slow, grind coarser. That's the moment you understand: Espresso isn't art, it's science. And with the right machine – the Linea Mini R – you'll taste the difference.
