Mahlkönig EK43 S – Compact 98mm All-Rounder Grinder for Espresso and Filter
An espresso in the morning, a pour-over in the afternoon, maybe a French press somewhere in between – all from one grinder: the EK43 S grinds everything from Turkish-fine to coarse, cleanly separated and with a consistency that shows up in the cup as clarity and a long, rounded finish. It's exactly this versatility that made the EK family legendary.
The EK43 S brings the large 98mm grinding chamber of the iconic EK43 into a more compact housing – ideal for smaller coffee bars that rely on particle consistency. As a partner of Mahlkönig, we set it up for your brewing method and guide you through the dial-in.
What makes the EK43 S special
98mm Hardened Tool Steel
The large, glass-bead-blasted burrs made from hardened tool steel (64–66 HRC) produce an exceptionally even particle distribution – the foundation for high, clean extractions with fewer off-flavors.
A true all-rounder
From Turkish-fine through espresso to filter, French press, or cold brew: the stepless adjustment covers nearly every brewing method.
Stepless with a zero point
The grind adjustment runs stepless, with no clicks; the zero point can be recalibrated – so you can find every setting again exactly.
Vertical burrs, low retention
The vertically mounted burrs are easy to access and retain very little ground coffee – something that suits single-dosing well.
High throughput, compact
At 19–21 g/s, the EK43 S works briskly, yet needs noticeably less counter space than the classic EK43.
Long service life
The burrs are rated for around 6000 kg of throughput – a grinder built for many years of use.
When it comes to brewing, there's no "right" or "wrong": grind size, dose, and ratio are the dials you use to find your own taste. For espresso, 1:2 is a common starting point – around 18 g of ground coffee to roughly 36 g in the cup; in filter, the EK43 S shows off its consistency especially well.

What goes with it
For precise burr alignment, there's a matching alignment tool; you'll also find the bigger sibling EK43 and the flagship EK OMNIA in our Mahlkönig selection. For espresso, discover the right machine in our espresso machines, and for filter it's worth a look at our Hario pour-over selection. Not sure about the combination? Our machine and grinder consultation can help.
Experience it live in Bern and Zurich
An all-rounder grinder is also about handling, stability, and the way it grinds. Come by, and we'll show you the EK43 S in action and dial it in together with you for your brewing method.
Roastery tip
In filter, the EK43 S shows off its clarity. We recommend Nutty Delight as a rounded all-rounder and Very Nutty as a bold, full-bodied filter; Cozy Chocolate stays chocolatey and dense in espresso. If you're after a fruitier cup, Wild Peach or Bright Cassis reveal a livelier side. You'll find all our beans in our coffee beans selection. That's our recommendation, one of many.
Frequently asked questions about the Mahlkönig EK43 S
What's the difference between the EK43 S and the EK43?
The EK43 S uses the same 98mm grinding chamber in a more compact housing with a slightly smaller bean hopper (approx. 800 g). That means it also fits into smaller bars, with the same grind quality.
Is the EK43 S suitable for filter and espresso?
Yes. Through its stepless grind adjustment, it covers a very wide range – from Turkish-fine through espresso to filter, French press, and cold brew.
How much ground coffee stays behind in the grinder?
Thanks to the vertically mounted burrs, retention is low – which also makes the EK43 S attractive for single-dosing, where you dose bean-by-bean per portion.
How long do the burrs last?
The hardened tool steel burrs are rated for around 6000 kg of throughput at a medium setting – a grinder built for many years of operation.
Which machine or brewer pairs well with the EK43 S?
For espresso, a machine with a standard 58mm portafilter from our espresso machines, and for filter, a pour-over dripper from our Hario selection. We're happy to advise you through our machine and grinder consultation.
Can I see the EK43 S before buying?
Yes, in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b), you can experience the EK43 S live.
