Best Portafilter Espresso Machine Switzerland: Which one suits you?
It's just after six, the kitchen is still quiet. You insert the portafilter, feel the slight resistance as you lock it in, hear the pump hum – and then it flows, dark and rich, into the preheated cup. This single moment determines which machine is right for you. Not the datasheet.
Best Portafilter Machine Switzerland: Which one suits you?
The honest answer first: There isn't one single best portafilter machine. There is the one that fits your morning, your space, and your lifestyle. No system is better or worse – they are different. What you read here is our perspective as a coffee roastery; others see it differently, and that's just as valid. No espresso police, no right or wrong. The only thing that matters: The coffee must taste good to you.
If you love the ritual: manual
A manual machine like the Flair Espresso needs no electricity, just hot water, a good grinder, and you. You apply the pressure by hand, feel the puck, watch the espresso flow. After about five minutes, you're ready. For those who seek deceleration and craftsmanship – and unbeatable for travel.
If you start your day uncomplicatedly: single boiler
A single boiler has one boiler for brewing water and steam. You consciously switch between both steps – first the espresso, then the milk. This is a calm, sequential process and not just for pure espresso drinkers; cappuccino works wonderfully, you just need a little patience. Compact machines with a thermoblock are ready in 5 to 10 minutes, classic single boilers in about 15 minutes. Brands we experience daily: Profitec, ECM, Lelit and La Pavoni.
If milk drinks are a daily ritual: heat exchanger
A heat exchanger uses a steam boiler with a heat exchanger and can brew and froth milk simultaneously. This is the tried and tested classic for cappuccino households – reliable and uncomplicated, ready for operation after about 20 minutes. Machines from Rocket, ECM and Profitec are at home here.
If you want the most refined aroma profile: dual boiler with saturated group head
A dual boiler has two separate heating systems and regulates brewing and steam temperature independently – maximum control, no waiting. We perceive that a saturated group head, as used by La Marzocco and Arkel, delivers a more refined, multi-layered aroma profile than a classic E61 group head – regardless of the heating system. This is our observation; others experience it differently. More on this in our Deep Dive into heating systems.

What shapes the taste more than the machine: the grinder
To be honest: The coffee grinder often has more influence on the cup than the machine. Consistent grind size is the foundation of any controlled extraction. Plan it in from the beginning – a very good machine with a mediocre grinder will underperform.
Budget: every path is valid
There's great espresso in every price range. No budget is "just the beginning". For those who want to start affordably and well, there are wonderful manual machines and solid single boilers; those who seek more control, temperature stability, and lifestyle will find it with a saturated group head. Both paths are equally valid – you want it, or you don't.
You decide most honestly on-site
In our showrooms in Bern and Zurich, you can experience the types directly side by side – the same coffee, the same grinder, the difference in the cup. If you prefer to start online, our machine and grinder comparison will help you get oriented. You can find the full overview in our portafilter machines.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best portafilter machine in Switzerland?
There isn't one best – there's the one that suits your morning. Those who love the ritual will be happy with a manual Flair Espresso; those who start uncomplicatedly with a single boiler; those who make milk drinks daily with a heat exchanger; those who want the most refined aroma profile and full control with a dual boiler and saturated group head. This is our view as a coffee roastery, one of many.
Single boiler, heat exchanger, or dual boiler – which one suits me?
A single boiler has one boiler and switches between brewing and steaming – calm and deliberate, ideal if mostly espresso goes into the cup. A heat exchanger brews and steams simultaneously – practical for regular cappuccinos. A dual boiler regulates brewing and steam temperature independently – maximum control. No system is better or worse, they suit different daily routines.
How important is the grinder compared to the machine?
In our experience, the grinder is at least as important as the machine, often more important. Consistent grind size is the prerequisite for controlled extraction. A very good machine with a mediocre grinder will underperform. So, plan for the grinder from the start.
Can I see the machines before buying?
Yes. In our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b), the machines are live and powered – you can see them, touch them, and experience the differences in the cup. Feel free to bring your own beans. Since not every model is always set up, it's best to contact us briefly in advance at office@coffeecoachingclub.ch.
How quickly can a machine be delivered?
Delivery throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein usually in 2 to 4 working days, Click and Collect in Bern and Zurich is possible at any time. When you buy a machine, a personal private barista course is included, and financing is available for larger purchases.
Roastery Tip: No matter which machine you choose – full-bodied and rich it will be with Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight. Those looking for maximum body without any acidity should go for Very Nutty. And for all curious people who want to discover a lively, fruity experience: Wild Peach. This is our recommendation, one of many.
