The running surface where the lever builds its pressure
The cylinder is the heart of the lever group. The piston runs inside it, the piston rings seal against its wall, and its surface determines whether the spring transfers its pressure cleanly to the ground coffee. A clean, undamaged running surface is the prerequisite for every even shot on a LEVA.
Wear appears gradually: the lever becomes stiffer at one point, water collects on the piston rod, and new seals last only weeks instead of months. If you keep replacing only the seals, you are treating the symptom – the scoring in the wall remains.
When it is due
Replace the cylinder if there are noticeable longitudinal score marks in the running surface, if fresh sealing rings start leaking again after a short time, if the lever catches at a certain point, or if the wall is corroded or eroded.

Important for installation
The cylinder sits inside the machine and carries hot water under pressure. Before opening, the machine is disconnected from the power supply and the water supply and left to cool down depressurised. The lever group is also under spring tension – anyone who dismantles it without knowing the correct sequence risks injury. We deliberately do not provide step-by-step instructions here; this is a job for a qualified technician.
Who it is for
For service workshops overhauling a LEVA, and for operators who want to bring their machine back to its original condition after many years instead of continuing to fit new seals.
What goes with it
At the same time, it makes sense to renew the complete piston including sealing rings and the LEVA piston service kit; this also includes the piston rod guide ring and the cylinder head guide. The matching tools are the UT022 puller and the UT017 tool for inserting the piston. All other items can be found under La Marzocco LEVA spare parts.
From our workshop in Bern and Zurich
After every cylinder replacement, we work the lever through its full travel twenty times dry before any water flows. If the travel feels different at one point, something is misaligned – and it is better to find that before the first shot than after. This is our routine, not a manufacturer requirement. The first real shot is then pulled with a Nutty Delight, sometimes with the Cozy Chocolate or the Very Nutty. The full selection can be found under Coffee beans.
No returns
Original spare parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are procured specifically for each order and cannot be resold after being installed or test-fitted on the machine. So before ordering, check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or drop us a line and we will check the fit together. Your rights in the event of defective goods remain unaffected.
Frequently asked questions
What does “new version” mean?
Our documentation lists the item as the new version under A.5.070.01 without saying how it differs from the previous one. We pass this on as it is and do not claim any difference we cannot prove. Send us the serial number and we will check.
Are the piston and sealing rings included?
No. Only the cylinder is supplied. Piston, sealing rings, springs and service kits are separate items.
Can I have the cylinder reconditioned instead of replacing it?
Light deposits can be removed. Noticeable scoring, however, cannot – polishing it out enlarges the diameter and loses the seal. In that case, replacement is the more honest option.
What material is it made of and how big is it?
We have no information on this, so we do not make any claims. The only reliable reference is the part number A.5.070.01.
Can I pick up the part at your shop?
Yes. We are in Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and in Zurich at Hagenholzstrasse 50b. Just let us know which part you need and we will have it ready for you.
