The piston goes into the cylinder straight, not tilted
When reassembling the lever group, the piston has to go into the cylinder with the seal rings already fitted. The rings stick out, and if you simply push the piston in, you will almost always pinch an edge. You won't notice it right away, only once the lever moves stiffly or the group starts leaking water downwards after a shot.
The tool compresses the seal rings as the piston goes in and keeps the piston straight. Afterwards the lever runs smoothly and evenly – just the way a LEVA should feel.
When you need it
Every time you reassemble after a piston service, after replacing the seal rings, and whenever the lever feels rough or uneven after the last overhaul.

Who it's for
For anyone who dismantles the lever group on a LEVA: service companies, workshops and technically skilled operators who take care of the piston service themselves.
What goes with it
The same job calls for the complete piston including seal rings, the piston service kit LEVA and the piston rod guide ring. All other items are listed under La Marzocco LEVA spare parts and in the Original spare parts section.
From our workshop in Bern and Zurich
Before inserting, we coat the cylinder and seal rings with food-grade silicone grease – sparingly, just a thin film. Too much grease collects coffee grounds and turns into an abrasive paste within a few weeks. That's our routine, not a manufacturer requirement. Then two blank shots; the third one we drink, usually a Nutty Delight, sometimes the Cozy Chocolate or the Very Nutty. You'll find the whole selection under Coffee beans.
No returns
Original spare parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are sourced specifically for each order and cannot be resold once they have been installed or test-fitted on a machine. So before ordering, please check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or drop us a quick message and we'll check the fit together. Your statutory rights in the case of defective goods remain unaffected.
Frequently asked questions
Do I also need UT022?
UT022 is the puller tool for removal, UT017 the tool for installation. If you dismantle the group completely, you'll usually work with both.
Are seal rings included?
No. Only the tool is supplied. The piston, seal rings and service kits are separate items.
Does it fit every LEVA?
Our documentation lists it for the LEVA without any further restriction. Send us the serial number if you're unsure.
What material is it made of?
We have no information on this, so we don't make any claims. The only reliable reference is the part number UT017.
Can I pick up the part from your shop?
Yes. You'll find us in Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and in Zurich at Hagenholzstrasse 50b. Just let us know which part you need and we'll have it ready for you.
Questions about the fit? Write to us at [email protected]. We deliver across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein in 2-4 working days.
