ECM Puristika – Single Boiler for Pure Espresso
Water in the glass tank, switch on, pull the first espresso after around eleven minutes. The ECM Puristika is a slim single boiler without a steam wand, built only for espresso, with PID temperature control and a timer in the display.
ECM is based in Bammental near Heidelberg. The Puristika has a rounded housing in anthracite, a stainless steel boiler of around 0.75 litres, a quiet vibration pump and a glass water tank that can be placed freely. Coffee Coaching Club is a partner of ECM, to buy in Switzerland from us online and in Bern and Zürich.
Features of the ECM Puristika
Single boiler with quiet vibration pump
A stainless steel boiler of around 0.75 litres supplies the ECM brew group, and the pressure is built up by a vibration pump that ECM describes as «low-noise». There is no steam or hot water wand; the machine is designed entirely for espresso. According to ECM, it is ready after 11 minutes.
Rounded housing in anthracite
The housing is rounded and finished in anthracite, and the pressure gauge and expansion valve carry deep blue accents. At 195 mm wide, the Puristika takes up little space on the counter.
Glass water tank, freely placeable
The glass water tank holds around 2 litres and is connected at the back via two connecting hoses. This lets you place it next to the machine wherever suits you.
Transport box for on the go
ECM mentions a practical transport box that lets you set up the Puristika in another location as well.
The details in everyday use
PID temperature control and timer
The PID control keeps the boiler temperature constant, set to 93 °C at the factory. The temperature can be adjusted via the display, in either °C or °F. During the shot, the display shows a timer in seconds. We base extraction on weight; 1:2 is a good starting point.
Fast Heat Up
If the boiler temperature is below 40 °C when switched on, the Puristika starts in fast heat-up mode. The user manual gives around 10 minutes, depending on the ambient temperature. The display then prompts a short flush with «FLU» until «rdY/Go» appears. The function can be switched off in the menu.
ECO mode and shot counter
The ECO mode switches the machine off after an adjustable period without use, programmable in steps of 30 up to 600 minutes. If you wish, a counter reminds you with «CLn» to clean the brew group after 10 to 200 shots. ECM recommends cleaning the group after around 90 to 140 shots.
Brew pressure at the expansion valve
At the factory, the Puristika is set to around 9 to 10 bar. You can change the brew pressure yourself at the easily accessible expansion valve and read it on the pump pressure gauge. The adjustment is made with the blind basket.
Drip tray and blind basket
The drip tray pulls out towards the front and should be emptied in good time. Beneath it, in the metal chassis, the blind basket has its place. According to ECM, the portafilter, drip plate and glass tank should not go in the dishwasher.
Water
ECM recommends filtered water with a maximum of 4 °dH. Water makes up most of an espresso; you will find filters in the BRITA collection.

Who the Puristika is made for
For anyone who drinks espresso without milk and is looking for a slim machine with PID. If you steam milk regularly, you will find single boilers, heat exchangers and dual boilers with a steam wand in the ECM collection and in our coffee machines. For us, single boilers are not only for espresso drinkers; the Puristika without a steam wand deliberately is.
Our advice tool helps narrow things down, as does a free consultation appointment in the showroom, by phone or virtually. If you want to compare machines and grinders side by side, book the espresso machine and grinder comparison in the showroom, an option, not a requirement. Not every model is set up at all times, so let us know your preferred model in advance at [email protected].
What goes with it
A machine goes with a grinder; you will find all models in our coffee grinders. For anyone who wants grinders that are affordable and precise: Eureka or a hand grinder from Timemore. If you want more: Weber Workshops or Option-O. Burr sets are like engines, there is no objectively best one.
For anyone who wants scales that are affordable and precise: the Normcore collection. If you want an app, flow-rate display and Bluetooth: Acaia. Tamper, WDT tool and puck screen are available affordably from Normcore and with more material effort from Weber Workshops, all tampers in the tamper collection. You will find group cleaner under machine and grinder cleaning.
Frequently asked questions
Can I froth milk with the ECM Puristika?
No. The Puristika has neither a steam nor a hot water wand and is designed entirely for espresso. You will find machines with a steam wand in the ECM collection.
How long does the ECM Puristika take to heat up?
According to ECM, it is ready after 11 minutes; the user manual gives around 10 minutes in Fast Heat Up mode, depending on the ambient temperature.
Can I adjust the brew temperature of the ECM Puristika?
Yes. The PID control is set to 93 °C at the factory, and the value can be adjusted via the display.
How do I clean and descale the ECM Puristika?
The brew group is backflushed with the blind basket and 3 to 5 g of group cleaner; ECM recommends this after around 90 to 140 shots, and without cleaner in between. Filtered water up to 4 °dH helps prevent limescale. According to ECM, a machine that is already scaled belongs in the hands of a specialist.
Can I see the ECM Puristika before buying?
In our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) we show a wide selection, but not every model is on display at all times. Write to us before your visit at [email protected] and we will check whether the Puristika is there.
How do I buy the ECM Puristika?
Online in the webshop, with delivery in 2–4 business days to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, or via Click & Collect in Bern and Zürich. Financing available. We answer questions by email at [email protected], via coffeecoachingclub.ch or by phone during business hours.
Tip from the roastery: For dense, chocolatey espresso from the Puristika we roast Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight. Maximum body without acidity comes from Very Nutty. If you want to discover fruity notes, you will find them in Wild Peach. That is our recommendation, one of many.
