ECM Leveler Tamper 58 mm – flat, with adjustable tamping depth
One press until the ring rests on the basket rim, and the coffee bed is compressed to the same depth with every shot. The ECM Leveler is a flat tamper with infinitely adjustable tamping depth.
ECM makes it by hand from aluminium and stainless steel: an aluminium handle, below it the adjustment ring and the flat stainless steel base with a diameter of 58 mm. ECM calls the tool «Leveler»; functionally it is a tamper with a depth stop.
How the depth stop works
The base protrudes from the ring only as far as you set it. When you tamp, the ring comes to rest on the basket rim. From that point on, the coffee is not compressed any further, even if you press harder. Compression therefore depends on the set depth, not on the force in your wrist.
Once matched to your dose and your basket, the Leveler repeats the same depth with every shot. If you change dose or basket, you set the depth again.
An evenly compressed bed makes shots more comparable; it does not make any shot replicable. Bean, humidity and person change every day. We judge extraction by brew ratio, for us usually below 1:2, not by time. There are no espresso laws; what matters is whether you enjoy the coffee. Our opinion is one of many.
Leveler or Distributor?
ECM offers two tools with a similar build. The Leveler has a flat base and compresses the coffee. The Distributor has a wedge-shaped underside and spreads the coffee by turning it before tamping. You will find both in our ECM collection.

Who it is made for
For everyone who works with a 58 mm portafilter and wants the tamping depth to be a fixed value, regardless of who is at the machine. That helps in a household with several people just as much as in your own morning routine.
Nobody needs a tamper with a depth stop. Anyone who likes the weight of aluminium and stainless steel in the hand and values the same routine with every shot knows why. Which machine and grinder suit your setup is shown by our advice tool for coffee machines and grinders.
What goes well with it
Before tamping comes breaking up the clumps. In our WDT tools you will find, for everyone who wants it affordable and precise, the WDT tool from Normcore. If you want more, go for the Moonraker from Weber Workshops.
After tamping, many people place a puck screen on the coffee bed. Our puck screens cover both routes: affordable from Normcore, made with more effort by Weber Workshops. And because the choice of basket fundamentally changes the aroma profile, it is worth taking a look at our precision baskets and filter baskets.
Frequently asked questions
Is the ECM Leveler a tamper or a distributor?
A tamper. The ECM Leveler has a flat stainless steel base and a depth stop; it compresses the coffee. For distributing before tamping, ECM offers the separate Distributor with a wedge-shaped underside.
How do I set the tamping depth?
Hold the adjustment ring and turn the handle to release the base. Then set the depth via the thread and tighten it again. The depth is infinitely adjustable and stays the same for all further shots.
Does the ECM Leveler fit my basket?
It has a diameter of 58 mm and is intended for portafilters with 58 mm baskets. The inner diameter of baskets varies slightly between manufacturers. If in doubt, send your machine and basket to [email protected] and we will check the fit.
Do I also need a WDT tool or a distributor?
No. The Leveler works on its own. A WDT tool or a distributor ensures even distribution beforehand; that is an option, not a requirement.
Can I see the product before buying?

Tip from the roastery: A constant tamping depth shows most clearly with full-bodied roasts. Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight give dense, sweet cups with chocolate, caramel and nuts. Very Nutty goes towards maximum body without acidity. If you are curious about something fruity, Wild Peach is a lively addition to discover. Other beans work too. That is our recommendation, one of many.
