Set the height to your dose once, place the tool on the portafilter, and turn – the angled faces beneath the base gently push the grounds level. What were hills and valleys a moment ago now sits even, ready for a clean tamp.
An adjustable distributor and leveler for compact 51 mm machines.
During the shot, water seeks the path of least resistance through the puck. If the grounds sit unevenly, it flows faster where they're looser – and extraction becomes uneven. The leveler evens out the surface before you tamp: its angled faces on the base push the grounds sideways and level as it turns.
The height is adjusted on the tool so it matches the amount of grounds in your 51 mm basket. A simple motion: place, turn, tamp. Espresso is a craft, not a law – an even bed just makes it more repeatable. Our opinion is one of many.
| Type | Distributor / leveler, height-adjustable |
|---|---|
| Diameter | 51 mm (for 51 mm portafilters) |
| Base | angled faces for even distribution |
| Height | adjustable to the amount of grounds |
| Use | place, turn, then tamp |
For anyone with a 51 mm machine such as DeLonghi, Smeg or La Pavoni who wants to distribute their grounds evenly before tamping. The adjustable height fits the tool to different doses.
A leveler works together with a tamper and a WDT tool. Tampers, WDT tools and puck screens are available affordably in the Normcore Collection and especially finely crafted in the Weber Workshops Collection; more tools are in our Tamper Collection.
And because an even bed only pays off with the right machine, it's worth a look at our espresso machines – supported by our advisory tool.
The leveler smooths the surface with angled faces; the WDT tool breaks up clumps deep in the grounds using fine needles. Many people use both, one after the other.
Adjust the height on the tool to match your dose – the base then sinks just deep enough to level the surface without heavily compacting it.
It's made for common 51 mm portafilters. If in doubt, check the inner diameter of your filter basket.
Absolutely – come experience it live in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b).
An even distribution really shows with body-rich, sweet roasts. Our Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight taste round and are forgiving. For maximum body without any acidity, go for the Very Nutty, for a fruity experience, the Wild Peach. That's our recommendation – one of many.
