The portafilter settles against the edge, the worktop stays quiet, and the pressure goes where it belongs.
The mat is moulded from silicone and six millimetres thick. On one side, a raised edge guard stands up, which you hang over the table edge. This keeps the mat from slipping when you tamp, and the portafilter handle has room instead of knocking against the worktop.
That's less trivial than it sounds. If the surface gives way or shifts while you tamp, the tamper tilts slightly, the pressure is distributed unevenly, and later the water finds a preferred path through the puck. A steady, soft but not springy surface is the simplest way to get rid of this source of instability. On the side, the worktop and the rim of the portafilter stay free of scratches, and silicone is dishwasher-safe.
There are no espresso police and no rule on how hard or how often you press. The coffee has to taste good; everything else is a matter of taste. Our opinion is one of many.

For anyone who tamps on a stone, wood or lacquered worktop and wants to protect both, the worktop and the portafilter. For anyone short on space, because the mat sits at the edge instead of in the middle of the surface. And for anyone who likes a fixed routine in the morning: mat down, portafilter on, done.
More accessories and the matching machines are in the Profitec collection. In Bern and Zurich you can see the mat in person, and if you want to buy barista accessories in Switzerland, you can also get them from us directly online.
What's still missing on the mat is the tamper. For anyone who wants an affordable, precise tamper: the Normcore Spring-Loaded Tamper with a defined pressure point from the Normcore collection. If you want more weight and more elaborate craftsmanship: the tampers from Weber Workshops.
If you'd rather have the portafilter standing upright than tamp flat, you'll find both routes in the tamping station collection: the affordable, precise Normcore Tamping Stations and the more elaborately made stations from Weber Workshops. And the biggest lever remains the coffee grinder: affordable and precise, the Varia VS3 or the Comandante C40; with larger burrs, the Varia VS6, the Weber Workshops EG-1 or an Option-O Lagom. Burr sets are like car engines, subjective, and no budget is just a beginning.
It hangs over the table edge and keeps the mat in place. At the same time, the portafilter handle has room and doesn't knock against the worktop when you tamp.
240 x 160 millimetres excluding the overhang, with a material thickness of 6 millimetres. So it takes up a narrow strip at the edge rather than half the work surface.
Yes, silicone can handle that. For everyday use, a damp cloth is usually enough, because ground coffee doesn't stick to silicone.
Yes, the mat is a flat surface and isn't tied to one size. It works with 58 mm portafilters just as well as with smaller ones.

A steady movement makes the morning calmer; the rest comes from the bean. From our coffee roastery, we recommend Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight: dense, aromatic and full-bodied, with caramel, chocolate and nuts.
For maximum body without any acidity, there's Very Nutty, and if you're curious, Wild Peach lets you discover a fruity, lively note. That's our recommendation, one of many, and any bean you enjoy works.
