Markibar ORHI A – Espresso Grinder with Instant Dose and Portafilter Recognition, 64 mm

The double portafilter goes into the fork, and the grinder knows what to do: the Markibar ORHI A dispenses the matching dose without you pressing a button.

The ORHI is Markibar's slim café grinder, built for businesses that want to work quickly and consistently. Version A has the automatic portafilter recognition, version B does not; otherwise the two are identical. The ORHI comes from Markibar in Esquíroz (Navarra, Spain).

Instant Dose and portafilter recognition

The ORHI works with Markibar's Instant Dose system. In Pre Dose mode, the next dose is ground and waiting in the doser, and it is dispensed immediately when the portafilter is inserted, compact and without excess. In On Demand mode, the grinder only grinds on request. The quick change is set from the factory, with which you switch directly between the two modes.

On the ORHI A, the grinder recognises the double portafilter by an identifier and automatically dispenses the double dose, and without an identifier the single dose. That takes one manual step out of every shot and avoids mixed-up doses. On the ORHI B, you preselect the less frequently used dose with a button.

Dosing, grinding mechanism and temperature

Dosing is by time; you programme the single and double dose separately, and 1.8 and 3.1 seconds are set from the factory. Markibar states the repeatability as ±0.4 g once all parameters have been set. After a grind setting change you weigh once and extract by weight ratio, with 1:2 as a starting point.

Grinding is done with 64 mm flat burrs at 1,350 rpm (50 Hz). Motor and grinding chamber are thermally separated by a coupling, so that motor heat does not travel into the ground coffee; heat lets volatile aromas escape faster. Three burr sets are available: Food Friendly from the factory, rated for around 800 kg of coffee, Long Life for around 1,500 kg and Extreme Helfezi with TDC coating for around 5,000 kg, developed with the Swiss manufacturer Helfezi AG. Grinding mechanisms are like engines: each has its own character, and there is no objectively best one.

Who the ORHI A is made for

Markibar recommends the ORHI for up to around 15 kg of coffee per week. It suits cafés, bars and restaurants that work with single and double portafilters and want every dose without a button press. If you grind more than around 10 kg per week and want the grind setting lock or the fan of the IZAGA, you will find that in the IZAGA KEY. All models are in our Markibar collection.

You will find time-controlled café grinders from other brands for example in the Mahlkönig collection. Nobody needs automatic portafilter recognition, and many teams work excellently with a button. If you want it, you know why: one manual step less in every shot. Our advisor tool for machines and grinders helps you work it out. Our opinion is one of many.

What goes with it

You will find an espresso machine for everyday café use in our coffee machine selection or at La Marzocco. To check-weigh the dose: for anyone who wants a scale that is affordable and precise, Normcore; for those who want an app and a flow rate display, Acaia. Replacement burrs and portafilter holders are available in the Markibar collection, grinder cleaner under machine and grinder cleaning.

Ordering and advice

Coffee Coaching Club is the official Swiss importer of Markibar. You order the ORHI A directly online. Click and Collect is possible in Bern and Zurich, and so is financing. A free consultation appointment is an option, not a requirement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ORHI A and ORHI B?

The ORHI A recognises the double portafilter automatically and dispenses the matching dose without a button press. On the ORHI B, you preselect the less frequently used dose with a button. The grinding mechanism, housing and Instant Dose are the same.

What is the difference between ORHI and IZAGA?

According to Markibar, the ORHI has burrs rated for around 800 kg from the factory, the IZAGA for around 1,500 kg. The IZAGA additionally has the bidirectional grind setting lock and a fan, the ORHI a thermal separation without a fan. Markibar recommends the ORHI for up to around 15 kg per week, the IZAGA from around 10 kg.

Which burrs should I choose?

Food Friendly from the factory is rated for around 800 kg of coffee, Long Life for around 1,500 kg, Extreme Helfezi TDC for around 5,000 kg. The higher your consumption, the less often you change burrs with the longer-lasting ones.

Is a tamper included?

Yes, the ORHI is supplied with a fixed-mounted tamper: 57 mm diameter from the factory, and a 53 mm tamper base is included so that you can fit the diameter that matches your basket.

Can I see the ORHI A before buying?

We are happy to tell you in advance whether the ORHI A is currently set up in one of our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) or Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Write to us at [email protected].

Tip from the roastery: With Instant Dose, the dose sometimes sits in the doser for a while. For that we like beans with body and sweetness that carry this well: Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight. For maximum body without acidity Very Nutty, and if you want to discover something fruity, you will find it in Wild Peach. That is our recommendation, one of many.
