La Marzocco Linea Micra – Compact Dual Boiler Espresso Machine from Florence
The paddle touches your fingers. You slide it to the left, slowly, and feel the rotary pump start up – not as a sound, but as a subtle vibration in your fingertips, barely perceptible. The kitchen is quiet. It's half past six, the light is just coming over the rooftops, and the first drop emerges from the bottomless portafilter. Honey-colored. Thick. It falls into the preheated cup, trailing a thin thread behind it, and you already know in that moment: this one will be good. You smell it – chocolate, caramel, something nutty that only reveals itself as the crema settles. The first sip is warm and soft and rich, and behind it comes that sweetness that only arises when temperature, pressure, and bean align as they should.
The Micra took five minutes. From switching it on to this point. In those five minutes, you ground the beans and the aroma spread through the kitchen like a silent invitation. You distributed the coffee, tamped it, locked in the portafilter – and now you stand here with a cup in your hand that is better than what most cafes serve. Not because you are a better barista. But because the machine sitting on your kitchen counter was built in Scarperia near Florence, with the same brewing technology that works in the best cafes in the world. Just small enough for your home.
Saturated Group Head – why the first shot is as good as the third
What you taste in the cup begins inside the machine. And here, the Micra does something that fundamentally differentiates it from most machines of this size. In an E61 group head – the standard for Rocket, ECM, Profitec – hot water circulates through a heavy metal head. That takes time. Twenty minutes, sometimes longer, until the temperature is truly stable. The first shot in the morning often tastes different from the third, because the metal is not yet evenly heated through.
With the Micra, the brew boiler and group head merge into a single, electrically heated block. La Marzocco calls this an "integrated grouphead" – the same principle as in their commercial machines, just more compact. You feel the result immediately: The first shot in the morning has the same body, the same sweetness, the same clarity as the third. No guesswork, no flushing, no "the machine still needs to warm up." Five minutes after switching it on, you are where you want to be. What does that mean for the taste? Coffee contains over 800 compounds, and which ones end up in your cup depends on how evenly the water flows through the coffee puck. Temperature fluctuations of one or two degrees decide whether a shot is round and sweet – or flat and undefined. The saturated group head gives you this stability. And you can taste it. In our roastery, we observe that saturated group heads deliver a more refined aroma profile than E61 – regardless of whether it's a single boiler, heat exchanger, or dual boiler. Others see it differently, and that's okay. Our opinion is one of many.
Rotary Pump – Silence in the Morning
At half past six in the morning, when the house is still asleep, it makes a difference whether your machine hums or rattles. The vibratory pump, found in most machines of this class, sounds like a small drill. You can barely hear the Micra's rotary pump. What you feel is the pressure – even, linear, without fluctuations. The water enters the puck calmly, saturating it evenly, and extracting the aromas layer by layer. The extraction becomes clearer, the body denser, the cup cleaner. This is physics you can taste – even if you're not interested in why.
Compact Enough for Real Kitchens
29 cm wide. 34 cm high. The Micra fits under kitchen cabinets where other dual boilers would have to duck. La Marzocco placed the water tank at the front instead of the top – two liters, easily accessible from the front, without having to move or lift the machine. This sounds like a technical detail, but in everyday life, it determines whether a machine becomes part of your morning or whether it gets in the way. 19 kilograms – heavy enough to stand stably when you lock in the portafilter, light enough for two people to carry into the kitchen. Seven colors, from white to black and stainless steel to red, yellow, light blue, and gray. And yes – the color matters. Because this machine stands on your counter, every day, and because the feeling it creates is part of the experience. No one buys a Bentley because it drives faster than a Mercedes. With the Micra, it's similar: It's not just the technology. It's what it does to the space it occupies.
The App – More Control Than Any Knob
The La Marzocco Home App controls everything the Micra can do. Brew temperature to the exact degree – one degree more emphasizes body, chocolate, caramel. One degree less opens up fruity notes, acidity, complexity. Steam boiler pressure in three stages. Pre-infusion. And the schedule: You program the app so that the machine heats up before your alarm clock rings. You get up, it's ready. No waiting. The dopamine kick of anticipation – the knowledge that coffee is coming soon – begins on your way to the kitchen.
What you should know: The temperature can only be adjusted via the app, not on the machine itself. There is no display, no knob. For those who like apps, this is elegant. For those who prefer to turn knobs on the machine itself, this is a point to be aware of beforehand. We will show you this in our showrooms so you can feel it yourself before you decide.

Who is the Micra for?
Nobody needs a La Marzocco. That's important to say. There are wonderful machines for less money that make excellent espresso – an ECM Classika, a Rocket Appartamento, a Flair 58+2. The Micra is a choice, not a necessity. And that's exactly what makes it special.
Whoever wants a Micra knows why. Maybe it's the technology – dual boiler, saturated group, rotary pump, all in a housing that fits on any kitchen counter. Maybe it's the ritual – the paddle, the aroma, the silence of the rotary pump, the three minutes in the morning that are just yours. Maybe it's the feeling that arises when you enter the kitchen and this machine is there – the light falls on the stainless steel, the lines are clear and calm, and you know: this belongs to me. This is my morning. That's reason enough. Whoever wants it knows why.
Personal Ordering Process
We order the Linea Micra personally with you – no shopping cart, but a conversation. Color, configuration, matching grinder, plumb-in or tank, delivery or pickup – everything clarified in advance. Write to us at office@coffeecoachingclub.ch or call during business hours. We are a partner of La Marzocco and a coffee roastery in one – we know the machine inside out, and we roast the beans that go with it.
In our showrooms in Bern, Gerberngasse 44 and Zurich, Hagenholzstrasse 50b, you can see the Micra live – feel the weight, press the paddle, experience the workflow. Click and Collect at both locations. Or we deliver nationwide in Switzerland and to Liechtenstein, securely packaged, within 2–4 business days. A complimentary introductory course is included with purchase – approximately 60 minutes, during which we collectively go through extraction philosophy and build your personal espresso ritual, which then takes around 5 minutes. Financing via Heylight is possible.
What goes with it
The grinder decides. Pre-ground coffee loses in minutes what the bean built up over months – over 800 volatile compounds that rapidly dissipate after grinding. What makes your retro-nasal aroma experience – that moment when you swallow and the compounds rise through the throat to the olfactory mucosa – begins with the grinder. For those who want a reliable, affordable grinder: Varia Coffee Grinders – we import them directly into Switzerland. For maximum precision: Weber Workshops or Option-O. Extraction by weight ratio (1:2 as a starting point, not a law) provides the most reliable results. For that, a scale – affordable: Normcore. With app and flow rate display: Acaia. More background on the sensory aspects of pressure, temperature, and grind size can be found in our Sensory World. Or check out the Micra vs. Mini R vs. GS3 comparison.

Roastery Tip
When we fire up the Micra in the showroom, we usually reach for our Cozy Chocolate. There's a moment with the first sip – the cup is warm, the crema has just settled, and then comes that rich chocolate with a sweetness that slowly coats the tongue. This is no coincidence: The thermal stability of the saturated group head extracts precisely the compounds that create body and warmth from medium roasts. Nutty Delight works wonderfully with frothed milk – nutty, velvety, round, as if it were made for it. And for those who enjoy discovering something new: Wild Peach brings a vibrant acidity that is truly enjoyable with the Micra's precise temperature control – fruity, lively, a shot that surprises. This is our recommendation, one of many.
