You take the distributor in your hand – the wood sits warm and grippy in your palm, quite different from cool metal. You set it on the portafilter, give it a few turns – and the coffee grounds, a small mound a moment ago, now lie evenly spread. Only then comes the tamper.
A leveler (distributor) with a wood element for 58 mm portafilters, as a step before tamping.
Freshly ground coffee rarely falls evenly into the portafilter. The leveler spreads it flat with a short turning motion before you tamp – so water flows through the puck more evenly and extraction becomes more balanced. The tool is made in Italy.
A leveler doesn't replace the tamper, it prepares for it. Whether you need one is your own call – there's no right or wrong, in the end what counts is that the cup tastes good. Our opinion is one of many.

For anyone with a 58 mm portafilter who wants to spread the grounds evenly before tamping – and who prefers the warmth of wood in the hand over a cool metal handle. A simple step towards a more balanced extraction.
After distributing comes the tamper, before it the grinder: even grinding happens in our Coffee Grinders, the shot is pulled on your Espresso Machine. Our comparison tool helps with the choice.
If you'd like to compare tampers and levelers: affordable and precise is the Normcore Collection, while the Weber Workshops Collection shows the especially finely crafted side.
It spreads the coffee grounds evenly in the portafilter before you tamp. This leads to a more balanced extraction.
No. The leveler is the preceding step; compressing is then done by the tamper.
For 58 mm portafilters.
Very gladly. In our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) you can experience it live.
Evenly distributed, the espresso pulls through better. Our Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight bring rich chocolate and nut notes. For maximum body without any acidity, there's Very Nutty, and for a fruity experience, Wild Peach. That's our recommendation – one of many.
