Mahlkönig E64 WS – Espresso Grinder with Grind-by-Weight and Grind-by-Sync
Lock in the portafilter, the grinder weighs as it grinds and stops at 18.0 g: the Mahlkönig E64 WS doses to within 0.1 g, with 64 mm steel burrs.
The E64 WS is Mahlkönig's home espresso grinder with a built-in scale. It brings the Grind-by-Weight and Grind-by-Sync technology of the Pro Line grinders into a compact housing just 15.4 cm wide. Grind size is set electrically and shown in microns, and the Mahlkönig Sync App connects the grinder to Wi-Fi and the cloud.
Coffee Coaching Club is a partner of Mahlkönig. You can buy the E64 WS from us in Switzerland.
Features of the E64 WS
Grind-by-Sync
Burr distance is set electronically. You choose the grind size manually or let the grinder sync with compatible espresso machines and devices, such as the Mahlkönig Sync Scale. The grinder then adjusts the grind size to match the brew time you set in your recipe.
Software and connectivity
The Mahlkönig Sync App connects the grinder to Wi-Fi and the cloud. Software updates arrive automatically, and you see your grinding sessions on your smartphone, and with a Sync-capable machine your grinding and brewing sessions too. The app is available for iOS and Android.
Spout and ambient lighting
The spout sits on a ball joint and can be angled so you grind straight into your portafilter. You can set the ambient lighting at the spout to any colour and match it to your setup.
The details in everyday use
Grind-by-Weight
A scale under the portafilter fork weighs the grounds while grinding. The grinder stops at the programmed weight, with a resolution of 0.1 g. In portafilter detection mode it starts as soon as you insert the portafilter. Two recipes are active out of the box, and you can add more on the display.
Electric grind-size adjustment
The patented Disc Distance Detection (DDD) from the Pro Line grinders measures the distance between the burrs. The display shows it in microns, and you adjust it with a rotary knob. You calibrate the zero point without tools, with the display guiding you through the steps.
Assisted Dial-in and Brew Time Input
An assistant on the display guides you step by step to your target recipe. Without a Sync-capable machine, you enter the brew time from your machine manually, and the grinder then adjusts the grind size automatically.
64 mm steel burrs
Flat burrs made of special steel, 64 mm in diameter, idle speed 1950 RPM. According to Mahlkönig, grinding rate is around 2 to 3.5 g/s, depending on bean and grind size.
Designed for the home
Mahlkönig specifies a duty cycle of 6 seconds grinding and 54 seconds pause, with a maximum daily output of 2.5 kg. The sound emission value while grinding is 65 dBA.
Grind-by-Weight and extraction
We extract by weight ratio, with 1:2 as a starting point. When the dose stays constant, grind size, bean and temperature can be compared cleanly. Every shot is still unique, since the bean, humidity and how you feel that day keep changing. Our opinion is one of many.

Who is the E64 WS for?
For everyone who works with a bean hopper, doesn't want to check their dose with an external scale every time and would like to save recipes on the display. For everyone who wants to match grind size and brew time with the Mahlkönig Sync Scale or a compatible machine. You'll find the Mahlkönig range including the Sync Scale in our Mahlkönig collection.
If you often switch between beans and grind single dose, Varia and Weber Workshops offer grinders built for exactly that. Grinders are like engines: there is no objectively best one. Our coffee grinders collection shows every model, and the advice tool helps you choose.
You'll find matching espresso machines from La Marzocco and Rocket Espresso. For everyone who wants coffee scales that are affordable and precise: Normcore. If you want an app, flow-rate display and Bluetooth: Acaia. For puck prep, there are WDT tools and tampers from Normcore and Weber Workshops in our barista tools.
In the comparison workshop you can test espresso machines and grinders side by side, an option, not a requirement. For a free conversation, there is the consultation appointment.

Frequently asked questions
How precisely does the Mahlkönig E64 WS dose?
The built-in scale weighs while grinding with a resolution of 0.1 g. The grinder stops as soon as the programmed weight is reached.
Does Grind-by-Sync work with every espresso machine?
No. Automatic grind-size adjustment via Sync works with compatible machines and devices such as the Mahlkönig Sync Scale. With other machines, you enter the brew time manually on the display (Brew Time Input), and Grind-by-Weight works in any setup.
How is the grind size set on the E64 WS?
Electrically. Disc Distance Detection (DDD) measures the distance between the burrs, and the display shows it in microns. You calibrate the zero point without tools, guided by the display.
How much coffee can I grind with the E64 WS per day?
Mahlkönig specifies a maximum daily output of 2.5 kg and a duty cycle of 6 seconds grinding and 54 seconds pause. The E64 WS is designed for home use.
Which colours are available?
Mahlkönig offers the E64 WS in matte black and matte white.
Can I see the Mahlkönig E64 WS before buying?
Yes, in our showrooms in Zürich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) and Bern (Gerberngasse 44). Not every model is set up at all times, so send us the model you have in mind beforehand at [email protected].
Roastery tip: For most espressos we recommend Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight: full-bodied, dense, with chocolate and nut. If you're after maximum body without acidity, go for Very Nutty. Wild Peach is for everyone who wants to discover a fruity experience. With a constant dose from the E64 WS, you can clearly see what a new bean changes in the cup. That is our recommendation, one of many.
