What makes the leveler special
During the shot, water seeks the path of least resistance through the puck. If the grounds sit unevenly, it flows faster where they're looser – and extraction becomes uneven. The leveler evens out the surface before you tamp: its angled faces on the base push the grounds sideways and level as it turns.
You set the height on the tool so it matches the amount of grounds in your 51 mm basket. A simple motion: place, turn, tamp. Espresso is a craft, not a law – an even bed just makes it more repeatable. Our opinion is one of many.

The leveler smooths the surface with angled faces; the WDT tool breaks up clumps deep in the grounds using fine needles. Many people use both, one after the other.

Adjust the height on the tool to match your dose – the base then sinks just deep enough to level the surface without heavily compacting it.
