Twenty-two grams, firmly in the basket: a generous dose for anyone who likes their espresso dense and intense. The puck sits high, and in a naked portafilter the fast, even flow of the Nanotech basket keeps that large amount in check instead of letting it run out unevenly. After knocking out, the basket comes out almost clean – oils and water simply bead off the Nanotech quartz coating.
Nobody needs a precision basket to pull good espresso – the original basket does its job. You want one because the cup becomes denser, rounder and clearer. It's one of many possible choices, and we respect it either way.
A note from our experience that you should know before your first shot: the Nanotech quartz coating noticeably lowers the friction in the basket – the water runs through the puck markedly faster. This shifts the extraction dynamics, and the taste often changes radically compared with your previous basket. That isn't a flaw; it's the nature of this basket. Especially with the high 22 g dose, you should firmly expect to grind finer and dial your recipe in again – grind size first, then the dose if needed. Ours is one opinion among many – but this is an effect you should plan for.
Espresso is extraction by weight ratio – usually 1:2, so from 22 g of coffee around 44 g in the cup. How cleanly that works depends on how evenly the water runs through the puck. A precise, even hole pattern spreads the flow over the whole surface – fewer channels, fewer spots that are over- and under-extracted at the same time. With a high dose like 22 g, this evenness is decisive: a lot of coffee that still extracts in a round, controlled way. What you taste is density, sweetness and a long finish; caramel, chocolate and nuts come to the fore. Taste and smell are inseparable – a large part of the aroma arises retronasally, as you swallow. The Nanotech quartz coating on the AISI 304 stainless steel makes the surface smoother, repels oils and makes cleaning easier. It is our observation that the choice of basket fundamentally changes the aroma profile.

For anyone who loves dense, intense espresso and doses high – with a basket that keeps the large amount even. Every budget is welcome, and in a naked portafilter you can see the difference straight away. If you'd rather dose more moderately, you'll find the same basket in 15, 18 and 20 g. You belong here because you love coffee – not because you use a particular basket.
The basket looks its best in a naked portafilter. Because the shot runs faster, a finely adjustable grinder is especially worthwhile. For a level puck: the tamper collection – affordable with Normcore, premium with Weber Workshops. Against clumps beforehand: WDT tools. On top of the puck: puck screens. All other baskets: the precision basket collection.
The Nanotech quartz coating reduces friction in the basket, so the water flows through the puck faster. The extraction shifts noticeably and the taste often changes clearly. So grind finer and dial your recipe in again – grind size first, then the dose.
22 g is a high dose; make sure there's enough headspace to the shower screen so the puck doesn't touch it. In most 58 mm portafilters this works well. If you prefer something more moderate, go for 18 or 20 g – the same basket is available in all sizes.
The basket has no retaining groove around its edge and is held by the spring or the portafilter. It sits without any problem in most 58 mm portafilters – if in doubt, just tell us your portafilter model.
A daily backflush without detergent, and roughly every 50 shots with a cleaner such as Urnex Cafiza. Thanks to the coating, less coffee oil sticks to it.
Our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) show a wide selection, but not our entire range – the display changes. Drop us a quick line at [email protected] before your visit, and we will check whether the product you have in mind is currently there.
A high dose and an even basket especially reward dense, aromatic beans. From our coffee roastery, Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight extract full-bodied and round. If you're after maximum body without any acidity, stay with Very Nutty; if you like it fruity, you'll discover a lively peach note with Wild Peach. Our recommendation – one of many.
