ECM Classika III – Single Boiler Espresso Machine with Core Heat Brew Group
A click of the toggle switch, the polished stainless steel catches the first morning light, and the scent of freshly ground beans slowly drifts through the kitchen.
While you set out the cups and fill the basket, the machine warms up. According to ECM, the ECM Classika III is ready to brew after 6.5 minutes. This short wait is already part of the pleasure: the brain releases dopamine when it anticipates something good, not only once it arrives.
The Classika III is the successor to the Classika PID from the ECM Home Line. ECM, the manufacturer from Bammental near Heidelberg, has given it a heated brew group, a 500 ml boiler, an OLED display with rotary knob and programmable preinfusion. Coffee Coaching Club is a partner of ECM: you can buy the Classika III online in Switzerland or drop by our showrooms in Bern and Zürich.
What makes the ECM Classika III special?
ECM-61 Core Heat: ready to brew in 6.5 minutes
A brew group is a heavy piece of metal, and metal takes time to warm up. ECM has therefore integrated additional heating cartridges into the ECM-61 Core Heat brew group that heat it directly. According to ECM, this makes the Classika III ready after 6.5 minutes, almost twice as fast as its predecessor. According to ECM, the heated group also ensures stable brew temperatures.
OLED display with rotary knob
Turn, press, confirm: a single rotary knob takes you through the menu. You set the brew temperature between 85 and 99 °C in one-degree steps, with 92 °C set at the factory. During the shot the display shows the shot timer; in the background it counts your shots and, if you wish, reminds you to clean the brew group.
Temperature helps decide which of the more than 800 aroma compounds in coffee dissolve. In our experience, a little more heat brings more body to the cup, a little less lets aroma and complexity come through more clearly. A range to explore, not a law.
Programmable preinfusion
Before full pressure arrives, the pump actively builds pressure for a few seconds, then pauses and lets the hot water soak the coffee grounds completely. Only then does extraction start at 9 bar. You set the duration of both phases in seconds in the menu, and the function can be switched on and off at any time. How this shows in the cup is a learning process you experience anew with every bean.
Single boiler with 500 ml boiler and quiet vibration pump
A stainless steel boiler of around half a litre supplies espresso and steam one after the other. Because it is compact, the Classika III switches quickly from coffee to steam temperature, according to ECM. You set the steam temperature between 115 and 134 °C, with 128 °C at the factory. A rotary valve and a wand deliver steam or hot water. ECM describes the vibration pump as «Low-Noise».
Polished stainless steel with blue accents
ECM combines polished stainless steel with fine blue accents on the pressure gauge and the rotary valve. The pump pressure gauge shows you the pressure during the shot, and according to ECM the expansion valve is easily accessible. According to the user manual, the brew pressure can be set there between approx. 8.5 and 12 bar.
Design and feel work their effect before the first sip. Colour, material and shape measurably change how we perceive taste, and the smooth, polished metal is part of the ritual.
The details in everyday use
ECO mode and weekly timer
At the factory, ECO mode switches off the heating after 30 minutes without use, adjustable in 10-minute steps up to 600 minutes or off entirely. In the advanced settings, according to the user manual, you programme two on and two off times per day. That way the Classika III is already warm and waiting for you in the morning.
Water and filter
The water tank holds around 2.8 litres and sits under the removable cup tray; an adapter inside takes the supplied ECM water filter cartridge «Make Coffee Yours». According to ECM, the machine switches off automatically when water runs low, and if you wish the display reminds you to change the filter. Water makes up most of an espresso, and a mineral content between 50 and 100 mg/l has proven itself for us. More on this in our guide composing your own coffee water.
Cleaning
A blind basket and cleaning brush are included. We backflush briefly every day without cleaner and every 50 shots or so with group cleaner, which takes about five minutes. ECM itself recommends cleaning the brew group after 90 to 140 shots, and you set the reminder in the display between 10 and 200 shots. You will find group cleaner under machine and grinder cleaning.
Espresso by weight, not by the clock
The shot timer is a nice guide, but we still let the scale decide. We start at a ratio of 1:2, so 14 g of coffee in the supplied double basket becomes around 28 g of espresso, and we taste our way on from there. The basket itself also clearly changes the aroma profile, and with the 7 g and the 14 g basket you already have two paths in hand.
What you experience as aroma largely arises only as you swallow: aroma compounds rise through the throat to the olfactory mucosa and combine with warmth, texture and memory into something that is more than a drink. No shot is like the next, because the bean, the humidity and you yourself are a little different every day. That is exactly what makes it beautiful. Espresso is complex, but it is not rocket science, and there are no espresso police. The coffee has to taste good to you, nothing else counts.

Who is the ECM Classika III for?
For anyone who loves espresso at home, straight or as a cappuccino, and is looking for a machine that is ready quickly and takes up little space. As a single boiler, the Classika III makes espresso and milk foam one after the other. That is why, for us, single boilers are not only for espresso drinkers: in our experience, switching to steam works well for one or two milk drinks in a row. If you often make several cappuccinos back to back, a heat exchanger or dual boiler gives you a calmer workflow; our deep dive on single boilers, heat exchangers and dual boilers explains the differences.
Nobody needs a Classika III. You want it, or you don't. Those who want it rarely think of heating cartridges first, but of polished stainless steel on the counter, the brew lever in your hand and a morning ritual that feels like something. It is an emotional decision, and that is exactly how it should be.
With saturated brew groups, as built by La Marzocco or Arkel, we experience a more refined aroma profile than with E61 groups, regardless of the heating system. That is our observation, others see it differently, our opinion is one of many. Our technical check on E61, saturated groups and hybrids puts the designs into context.
Our advice tool narrows down which machine suits you, online Jackson, our AI advisor, helps you, and if you prefer to talk in person, you can book a free consultation appointment. In our Espresso Machine and Grinder Comparison you experience machines and grinders in operation, side by side. An option, not a requirement.
What goes with the ECM Classika III?
A machine goes with a grinder. For anyone who wants grinders that are affordable and precise: the VS3 from our Varia collection, or as a hand grinder the C40 from Comandante and the models from Timemore. If you want more: the Varia VS6, the EG-1 from Weber Workshops or the Lagom from Option-O. Burr sets are like car engines, subjective, there is no objectively best one. You will find all models in our coffee grinders.
For anyone who wants scales that are compact and precise: the Normcore collection. If you want an app, flow-rate display and Bluetooth: Acaia. Tampers and puck screens are available affordably from Normcore and with more material effort from Weber Workshops, all tampers in the tamper collection. For milk foam you will find pitchers from Normcore or Rhino in our barista milk pitchers. Nobody needs the more expensive one, you want it, or you don't.

Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight bring chocolate, nut and caramel to the cup, dense and round, our first choice for most cups from the Classika III. If you are looking for maximum body without any acidity, you will find it in Very Nutty.
