ECM Chrome-Plated Portafilter – single spout, double spout and Grand Crema bottomless

The handle tips into your hand, the weight sits exactly where it belongs, and the portafilter locks in without your wrist having to twist.

This angle is the thing you only notice when you lock it in. ECM builds its portafilters angled so your hand stays in its natural position and the handle doesn't sit crosswise to your forearm. With one shot in the morning, you hardly notice. With six shots on a Sunday afternoon, you do.

There are three versions to choose from, all finely chrome-plated, all with the subtle ECM embossing and the same balanced weight distribution. What sets them apart is what happens underneath.

    The three versions

The single spout guides the shot into a single cup. It's the calm everyday portafilter for everyone who mostly brews for themselves, and it comes without a basket – the choice of basket is up to you, and it changes the flavour profile fundamentally.

The double spout splits the stream across two cups. It's the classic choice when two people are drinking or when a double shot should run into a larger cup. It's also delivered without a basket.

The Grand Crema is the bottomless version. Without a bottom and without a spout, you see the extraction as it really runs: where the water comes through first, whether the puck holds evenly, when the colour turns from dark to light. No measurement tells you that as directly as the view from below. It comes with a 21-gram basket – with a weight ratio of 1:2 as a starting point, you end up with around 42 grams in the cup.

And it tells you something different every day. No shot can be replicated – beans, humidity and people change daily. That isn't a limitation, it's the beauty of it. There are no espresso laws and no espresso police; the coffee has to taste good, and the bottomless portafilter simply shows you faster what's behind it when it doesn't yet. Our opinion is one of many.

For context: of the bottomless version, we also carry the Grand Crema Carbon, a special edition with its own item number and an ECM IMS precision basket for 20 to 22 grams. And if you'd rather hold wood than chrome, you'll also find the versions with a wooden handle in our range.

    Who they're made for

The single and double spout are for everyone who wants to guide the shot cleanly into the cup without anything going astray – the unfussy route most people take every day. If you drink as a pair, take the double spout; if you usually start the day alone, the single.

The bottomless Grand Crema is for everyone who wants to see what's happening in the basket. It isn't a tool for advanced users, but the most direct feedback there is – especially when you're only just matching grind size and dose to each other. Espresso is complex, but it isn't rocket science.

You'll find the machines to go with it in the ECM Collection. We're a partner of ECM.

    What goes with it

Because the single and double spout come without a basket, it's worth a look at the precision baskets and filter baskets – every hole pattern shifts flow and flavour profile. A bottomless portafilter, on the other hand, shows every irregularity in the puck, which makes preparation more important. Among the WDT tools both routes stand side by side: the tool from Normcore for everyone who wants it affordable and precise, the Moonraker from Weber Workshops for everyone who wants more. Particle size and its evenness determine the quality of the extraction.

The same pattern applies to tamping: Normcore Spring-Loaded for the affordable route, Weber Workshops for everyone who wants more, both in the Tamper collection. No budget is just a beginning.

    Frequently asked questions

    Which version should I choose?

The single spout leads into one cup, the double spout into two, and the bottomless Grand Crema shows you the extraction from below. If you usually start the day alone, the single serves you well; if you drink as a pair, the double. The bottomless one comes in when you want to see what's happening in the basket. Our opinion is one of many.

Which machines do the portafilters fit?

ECM machines with an E61 group head. If you use another brand or aren't sure, tell us your machine's article number and we'll clarify it in advance.

    Is a basket included?

The bottomless Grand Crema comes with a 21-gram basket. The single and double spout are delivered without a basket; you'll find suitable baskets among the precision baskets and filter baskets.

What's the difference to the Carbon version?

The Carbon version is a special edition of the bottomless variant with its own item number and an ECM IMS precision basket for 20 to 22 grams. The classic Grand Crema is finely chrome-plated and comes with the 21 g basket.

    Does a bottomless portafilter spray?

If the puck sits unevenly, the stream can break out to the side. That's exactly the benefit: you see it immediately and can adjust grind size, distribution and tamping. With a little practice, it hardly happens anymore.

Can I see the product before buying?

Our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) show a wide selection, but not our entire range – the display changes. Drop us a quick line at [email protected] before your visit, and we will check whether the product you have in mind is currently there. If you order online: delivery to Switzerland and Liechtenstein takes 2 to 4 working days.

    From the roastery

A bottomless portafilter makes visible how densely a bean extracts, and a spout guides that same density cleanly into the cup. Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight give a compact, even stream and a round, sweet cup with chocolate and nut. If you want maximum body without any acidity, go for Very Nutty. And if you're looking for something lively in the cup while you watch, go for Wild Peach – fruity, a discovery for the curious. That's our recommendation, one of many; any other bean works just as well.
