Mazzer Philos stainless steel hopper lid – milled from solid, with gasket
The beans for your espresso trickle into the hopper, you reach for the lid and immediately feel its weight in your hand. Cool metal with a finely milled surface that settles onto the Philos with a calm, snug fit. Then you start the grinder.
The hopper lid for the Mazzer Philos is made in Mazzer's own mechanical workshop, precision-milled from a solid stainless steel bar. According to Mazzer, a built-in gasket reduces vibrations and ensures an exact fit on the hopper. It replaces the standard plastic lid and weighs around 500 grams. You can buy it online from us anywhere in Switzerland, or see it live in Bern and Zurich.
Why weight and gasket make a difference
During grinding a motor is at work, and wherever something rotates, vibrations arise. A light lid can vibrate along with it, a heavy one stays calmer, because more mass needs more energy to start moving. The built-in gasket also absorbs vibrations and holds the lid exactly on the hopper. Mazzer sums it up simply: fewer vibrations, a perfect fit.
The second level plays out in the mind. Sensory research shows that we read weight in the hand as value: in studies, the same food appears to be of higher quality when served from heavier tableware. Design and feel influence enjoyment before the first sip. The lid does not change the extraction, it changes how your ritual feels.
A statement on the counter
Nobody buys a Bentley because it gets them there faster. And nobody needs a solid stainless steel lid to make a good espresso, the standard lid does its job reliably. Those who want the stainless steel lid want the feeling: the metal, the weight, the calm way it rests while the Philos grinds, and a grinder that looks all of a piece right up to the top. Those who want it know why. That is our opinion, one of many.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference from the Philos standard lid?
The standard lid is made of plastic. The stainless steel lid is milled from a solid bar, weighs around 500 grams and has a built-in gasket that, according to Mazzer, reduces vibrations and ensures an exact fit.
Does the stainless steel lid fit the black and the silver Philos?
Yes. It sits on the stainless steel hopper of the Philos, and Mazzer shows it on both versions.
Does the stainless steel lid make my espresso better?
It does not change the extraction. According to Mazzer it reduces vibrations and sits snugly, the difference lies in the feel and the look. What ends up in the cup is determined by the bean, the grind size and the recipe. We like to start with a 1:2 ratio and taste our way on from there.
Do I need to install anything?
No. You take off the standard lid and place the stainless steel lid on the hopper.
Can I see the product before buying?
Yes. In our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) we are happy to show you our accessories, and in Zurich Mazzer is part of our larger grinder selection. With Click & Collect you can pick up your order at either showroom.
Tip from the roastery: With the heavy lid on the Philos, weighing and pouring in the beans becomes a small, calm moment. For exactly this moment we roast in our coffee roastery in Zurich with 100% green electricity: Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight for dense, round espressos with chocolate and nut, Very Nutty for everyone looking for maximum body without acidity, and Wild Peach as a fruity discovery for the curious. Any good bean works, even from the supermarket. This is our recommendation, one of many.
