The Maximatic has a dual-circuit heat exchanger with a solenoid valve in the group head. Daily backflushing with plain water flushes coffee oils and residue back out of the group head. About every 50 shots with cleaning powder — the whole process takes around 5 minutes and is the single most important piece of maintenance there is.

What happens without backflushing?
Coffee oils and residue build up in the solenoid valve and the group head. Over time, gaskets get gummed up, pressure build-up becomes uneven, and in the worst case the solenoid valve gets blocked. Issues can still happen — regular backflushing pushes them a long way back.
Can I use a regular filter basket instead of the blind filter basket for rinsing?
No. Only the blind filter basket, with its missing perforation, creates the pressure build-up that makes backflushing work. A regular filter basket just lets the water run straight through — with no cleaning effect.
