Profitec Bottomless Portafilter 58 mm – with 21 g Basket
The first drop gathers under the basket, becomes several, flows together and runs into the cup as a honey-coloured stream.
What the open bottom reveals
A portafilter without a bottom takes the cover away. You see how the water floods through the puck, when the stream forms and whether it starts in the middle or somewhere at the edge. If the ground coffee is evenly distributed and evenly tamped, the water floods through evenly, and that's exactly what creates the dense, almost syrupy crema you're hoping for.
And if not, you'll see that too. That's not a judgement, it's feedback you can use to do something differently on the next shot. Grind size, distribution, tamping, in that order. Espresso is complex, but it isn't rocket science, and no shot can be replicated anyway: the bean, the humidity and the person change every day. That's the beauty of it.
A 21 g basket is included. The choice of basket fundamentally changes the aroma profile, because the geometry decides how thick the puck becomes and how long the water is in contact. If you prefer to work by weight ratio, 21 g and a target of around 42 g in the cup gets you to the classic 1:2. That's our starting point, and our opinion is one of many.
The portafilter stays modular. With the double-spout silicone attachment and the two-cup basket that comes with Profitec machines, it becomes a portafilter with two spouts in seconds. Switch it over, rinse, carry on.

Who it's made for
For everyone with a Profitec machine who wants to see what happens under the basket. For everyone who wants to improve their distribution and needs honest feedback to do it. And for everyone who simply enjoys watching an espresso come to life, because those are some of the better two minutes of the day.
Nobody needs a bottomless portafilter. You either want one or you don't, and both are fine. If you want one, you usually know why. You'll find more models among our portafilters and bottomless portafilters.
What goes well with it
The basket has a say too. You'll find different inserts and geometries among our precision baskets and filter baskets. Many people add a puck screen on top: for everyone who wants one that's affordable and precise, the Normcore Puck Screen from our Normcore collection. If you want more, you'll find one in the Weber Workshops collection.
Because every tenth of a gram becomes visible on a bottomless portafilter, a scale is worth it. The Normcore scales are compact, precise and reliable; the Acaia models come with app and flow-rate display. Both sit side by side among our coffee scales, and the decision is yours.
Frequently asked questions
What's included with the bottomless portafilter?
A 21 g basket is included. So you can get started right away without ordering a basket separately.
Which machines does it fit?
Profitec lists it as an accessory for its own range of machines with a 58 mm portafilter. Exactly which models qualify depends on the year of manufacture. Send us your machine's item number and we'll clarify it before you order.
Can I also use it with spouts?
Yes. The portafilter has a modular design. With the double-spout silicone attachment and the two-cup basket that comes with Profitec machines, it becomes a portafilter with two spouts. With the single-spout silicone attachment and a one-cup basket, accordingly one.
What do I see through the open bottom?
You see the extraction from below: where the water comes through first, where it runs evenly, where it looks for a faster path. It's a learning process, not a verdict. No espresso police, no right and no wrong, just the coffee that should taste good to you.
Can I see the product before buying?
Our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) show a wide selection, but not our entire range – the display changes. Drop us a quick line at [email protected] before your visit, and we will check whether the product you have in mind is currently there. Buying online in Switzerland is the normal route.
How fast is delivery and where do you deliver?
We deliver within 2 to 4 working days throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. Questions are welcome by email to [email protected] or by phone during business hours.
Ordering is done online – that's the normal route with us. If you'd like to know something first, write to us at [email protected] or drop by coffeecoachingclub.ch. You can reach us by phone during business hours.
From our coffee roastery
We roast ourselves, and that's why we'll say it openly: the difference between two shots often comes from the bag, not the tool. Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight are our main recommendation for dense, sweet, full-bodied cups. Very Nutty goes even further towards body, with no acidity at all.
If you want to discover something fruity, Wild Peach is ready for you. That's our recommendation, one of many. Other beans work just as well, including the ones from the shelf around the corner.
