The upper clamping ring keeps the tamper base centred – so every puck comes out level again
In the PuqPress, the tamper base is not fixed rigidly but guided. The upper clamping ring is the part of this guide that holds the base from above and keeps it on its axis as it lowers. As long as it sits tight, the tamper comes down vertically onto the ground coffee and compresses it evenly across the whole surface.
When the ring loosens, you notice it first on the puck: one side is shiny, the other stays matt and rough. Then comes the noise – a short click or a faint scraping when pressing, because the base has developed play in the ring that it did not have before.
When it is due
The puck is compressed unevenly or shows a slanted edge. You can noticeably tilt or move the tamper base sideways by hand. A metallic click occurs when pressing. The espresso suddenly runs unevenly from the bottomless portafilter, even though grind size and dose are unchanged. Or the ring itself shows grooves, raised edges or worn chrome plating on the clamping surfaces.

Who it is for
For bars and roasteries that trigger the PuqPress hundreds of times a day, and for service technicians who want to get a tamper unit free of play again. Also for high-frequency home setups – a clamping ring is a wear part, not a defect.
Important for installation
The clamping ring sits in the moving drive of the tamper. Disconnect the device from the mains before any work and have the tamper unit opened by a qualified technician. The ring must be fitted perfectly aligned and with the specified tightening, otherwise the base will tilt and the guide will be damaged. We deliberately do not provide step-by-step instructions here.
What goes with it
Lower clamping ring for M3 to M6 as its counterpart, the guide ring 61 × 2.5 mm, the 58 mm tamper base with non-stick coating and the whole category Macap and PuqPress spare parts.
From our workshop in Bern and Zurich
This is our routine, not a manufacturer specification: once a month we check the tamper unit with a simple test – device off, grab the base, wiggle it sideways. If nothing moves, all is well. If something moves, we note it and replace the clamping ring and guide ring together at the next service. Then we pull three shots and look at the puck before releasing the machine again – preferably with Nutty Delight, because this blend immediately reveals an uneven extraction as sourness. If you prefer testing with something chocolatey, take Cozy Chocolate, and for building pressure in milk drinks, Very Nutty is our candidate. Everything else is in Coffee beans.
Returns excluded
Original spare parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are procured to order and cannot be resold after installation or test fitting on a machine. So before ordering, check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or drop us a quick line and we will clarify the fit together. Your rights in the event of defective goods remain unaffected.
Which PuqPress models fit this number?
The part number is 1-210-0007-8. The item description available to us does not indicate which series it covers, and we make no claims here. Send us your device's serial number and we will check the fit.
How does this ring differ from the upper clamping ring 1-210-0243-8?
The other item additionally states 71 mm and a tamper base range of 56 to 59 mm; this one states no dimension. That is why both are listed as separate items. We have no further documentation on the difference.
Is the tamper base included?
No. Only the upper clamping ring is supplied. Tamper base, lower clamping ring and guide ring are separate items.
Can I replace the ring myself?
We recommend installation by a qualified technician. The ring sits in the moving drive; if it sits crooked, the base tilts and damages the guide.
Can I see the part in your Showroom?
Our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) show a wide selection, but not our entire range – the display changes. Drop us a quick line at [email protected] before your visit, and we will check whether the product you have in mind is currently there. Bring your device's serial number and we will check the fit together at the counter.
